My Rental Boyfriend Is My Boss?! - Chapter 16
Chapter 16. To “Look The Part”
“… Do you want to watch the parade?”
Michiru followed her gaze to Kamijemori’s sudden words and was convinced.
“The parade? Oh, true. I wonder if it’s coming here.”
There were people waiting for the parade on both sides of the central road. They might be able to see a little of it from here.
For Michiru, who was not interested in characters or costumes, the parade time was for rides or souvenirs, but she suddenly remembered what had happened in the car.
“Why don’t we have a look? You might be able to see a bit.”
“I do know a good spot, if we want.”
“Oh, yeah, if we finish early.”
It’s hard to believe that just a few minutes ago he was pale and dizzy, so Kamijemori grabbed Michiru’s hand and started walking. She had never seen him move so quickly, although he’s not always so relaxed.
‘I knew you liked them.’
Michiru didn’t know if it was the characters, the stuffed animals, or the parade, but her face naturally broke into a smile as she watched Kamijemori’s back as he moved forward. The gloomy feeling she had felt in the car was gone now.
‘It would be nice if he could talk about it someday.’
Michiru squeezed Kamijemori’s big hand, hoping that she would be able to become someone he could trust enough to say that to her.
The spot Kamijemori mentioned was indeed true.
It was the landing of a staircase leading to a tall attraction, where you could see the main part of the parade up close. The attraction was currently under renovation, so they were able to watch it comfortably without getting in the way of other visitors.
After the parade, they had a late lunch, and as they lined up and rode attractions within Kamijemori’s reasonable range, and watched another parade, it wasn’t long before the sun went down.
As they left the exit of the attraction, the orange lights came on one after another in the darkness, illuminating the park in a fantastic way. The park had a different atmosphere than during the day, and Michiru was mesmerized by it.
“It’s already this late?”
Seeing Kamijemori checking his watch, Michiru suddenly felt lonely.
Michiru had often heard that the good times fly by, but she had never felt it so acutely.
“Is there anything you want to ride last?”
As Michiru opened the park map to see if there was anything, Kamijemori tilted his head slightly.
“I thought you wanted to ride that.”
In front of her gaze, there was a large Ferris Wheel with a circle of light that could be found anywhere in the park.
‘I’ve been trying not to look at it too much.’
Even if she didn’t dare choose it, there were plenty of other attractions in the large park. Michiru smiled awkwardly.
“You’ve been looking at it from time to time. Since you didn’t mention it, I thought you might want to save it for last.”
Michiru bit her lip at the overly frank statement. Sometimes, she forgot that Kamijemori was a capable boss. And this was how he reminded her of it.
For a moment, Michiru thought she would pretend like she always did. But when she looked down, she saw a hand holding hers.
She had just regretted being so self-conscious during the day, and now she was about to do it all over again.
“… Actually, I’ve never been on a Ferris Wheel before.”
“I’ve been to places with a Ferris Wheel before, but usually when I go out with Kimitaka I avoid places that look like that.”
Michiru felt that it was somehow wrong to ask Kato to go to places where the boundaries of friendship between men and women would be shaken.
Perhaps Kato felt the same way. Perhaps he deliberately avoided places that were too romantic.
That’s why when Michiru had mentioned a cruise dinner, he had chosen a houseboat. A place where he could, just barely, not waver in the boundaries of friendship.
Now she realized.
‘I see. Neither one of us had any intention of dating.’
Somewhere in the back of her mind, Michiru knew that being friends was the best relationship she could have. So, even though they could have become man and woman at any time in our long-lasting relationship, they didn’t. They didn’t want to. Because she didn’t want to.
‘Then why was I so shocked when I heard that he was getting married…?’
Michiru was about to sink into a sea of thoughts, when Kamijemori’s big hand pulled her back.
“Then let’s get on.”
Without even hearing Michiru’s reply, his feet were already on the Ferris Wheel.
“Oh no, I’m not…”
“I think I’m here to ‘look the part’.”
His hands were so strong that they grabbed her slender hands. Her legs were too weak to stop herself. She couldn’t think of a reason to deny it, and his back was too strong to refuse.
As she walked through the fantastic world, dimly illuminated by the orange light, she sometimes couldn’t even see her feet properly. However, the clearly visible figure of Kamijemori and his hand pulled the dazed Michiru along.
When Michiru saw the Ferris Wheel in front of her, she couldn’t help but gape at its size.
Perhaps it was because she had never even been close to a Ferris Wheel before, so she didn’t know the average size of Ferris Wheels and couldn’t compare them, but the sheer height of the top made her shy away a little, even though she wasn’t afraid of heights.
“Isn’t it a little big?”
“Sure, it’s bigger than a typical Ferris Wheel. Are you afraid of heights?”
“No, not at all…”
Michiru wondered if it was because she was looking at it from the ground. It’s kind of impressive. When she looked almost straight up, Kamijemori tilted his head.
“If you’re scared, don’t force yourself.”
“To celebrate the birthday of Pimok, the mascot of the Giant Ferris Wheel, we are handing out commemorative plush toys after passengers have disembarked.”
As Kamijemori was about to say something, a cast member near the Ferris Wheel spoke up. It was as if there was a light in his eyes.
It seemed that Michiru had no right to refuse.
‘I was defeated by a stuffed animal… but that’s okay. Like the roller coaster, it might be more fun to ride’
Although she was in a bit of a conflicted mood, it was not bad to see Kamijemori visibly excited. Michiru secretly encouraged herself to go on the Giant Ferris Wheel for the first time in her life.
