A Little Valentine’s Day Story (1)
That morning the weather was awfully whimsical.
The remnants of the heavy rain that had fallen during the night were still lingering over the sky as gray rain clouds. A strong, cold wind was blowing, and the air currents were pushing the rain clouds farther away, and on the other side, a distant blue sky was peeking out.
Here, the rain fell heavily in the early seasons of autumn and spring, and the weather rarely broke in the summer. There were no typhoons, the humidity was low and dry, and it was much warmer than the metropolitan area where Chizuru was living.
Yes, this was not Japan…
Perhaps not even Earth.
It was a faraway world that she chose to live in with the man she loved. It was a foreign land where the language, customs, weather, and everything else were different.
Chizuru had recently learned how to calculate the calendar in this world.
It was much like the Japanese lunar calendar, which used the moon phases to make up a month and included leap years every few years to adjust to the seasons.
So, to be precise, it was different. But in terms of the date, it was indeed today.
February 14th.
Yes, today was Valentine’s Day.

That evening.
After a day of thinking, Chizuru baked a sweet cake with a tinge of bitter spices similar to cocoa.
Of course, there was no chocolate in this world. The main sweets were syrupy confections, compotes of fruits stewed in sugar cane, and primitive cookie-like baked sweets mixed with grain, and they weren’t served very often.
There wasn’t even any wrapping paper, so Chizuru filled an empty glass jar with the baked sweets and wrapped a hair ribbon around the top as a small decoration.
This should be better than nothing!
This afternoon, despite the rainy weather, Lukrov was away with a few knights because he had to inspect the surrounding area for flood control. He was supposed to return by dinner, so she decided to wait for him leisurely in her bedroom.
Now that she thought about it, she had never seen Lukrov eat sweet things. Chizuru mused as she watched the light drizzle outside the window.
He was not a gourmet eater but instead believed that eating was an obligatory activity to bring nutrients into his body to live. Basically, he ate everything and was hardly picky about it
As she gazed at the baked sweets in the jar, which were slightly smaller than the palm of her hand, she told herself that this was just a symbol of love and appreciation, a kind of Valentine’s Day ritual. Of course, he would eat it, but perhaps he wouldn’t be overly pleased with its taste.
After placing the jar on the bedside table, Chizuru rolled over, feeling more tired than she had expected, probably because she hadn’t made sweets in a long time.
Just a bit.
She decided to do so and closed her heavy eyelids. Chizuru’s consciousness drifted away.
“Chizuru.”
A low, lustrous voice tickled her ear, and a masculine hand gently brushed her hair. She flinched and opened her eyes to see Lukrov before her. His hair was slightly damp, and his stubble cast a faint shadow under his chin, indicating the end of the day.
Chizuru smiled in relief and placed a hand on the knight’s cheek.
“Welcome back. I have a little surprise for you today.”
