Beast of the Frozen Night - Chapter 103.2
Anne’s simple response made her realize once more.
The Grand Duchy was particularly rich in ancient valuables and exotic items, largely because Daymond had acquired them intermittently over the years. Despite his reclusion, he had a keen eye for quality and was highly educated, having read through the library’s books extensively.
Whenever Anne was curious about something, Daymond could answer effortlessly.
Immersed once again in the bustling market scene, Anne suddenly sensed that they were attracting attention.
She had felt the stars since entering Lombard Boulevard, but now the intensity seemed to increase. Given the frequent commercial interactions in the area, it wasn’t just because they were outsiders.
“It feels like everyone’s only looking at us.”
Anne said turning to find Daymond with a taut jaw, she had already guessed the reason.
“Relax a bit.”
Daymond looked at her with eyebrows raised, as if asking what she meant.
“You’ve looked like a man dragged unwillingly to his wife’s shopping since we arrived. Are you going to keep making that frightening face?”
Sure enough, people had been gradually clearing a path in front of them, seemingly repelled by Daymond’s fierce aura and imposing presence.
Daymond forced a smile, though it was a situation where smiling was the last thing on his mind.
He had been barely suppressing his irritation at the glances sneaking towards Anne. Every passing man seemed to stare at her absentmindedly until they met Daymond’s gaze and quickly looked away in shock.
She was beautiful in his eyes, so naturally, she would be even more so in others’. However, their looks appeared overly sly to him, making him quite displeased. Yet, revealing his feelings seemed petty, so he kept his frustration to himself.
“It’s not that. It’s just so crowded, I’m worried I might lose you.”
Even without the crowds, the bustling streets were as chaotic as the downtown in the capital. It poses a risk of losing one’s companion when it is too busy. Their noble appearance made people maintain a respectful distance, but the sheer scale of the area and the crowd of people increased the chance of accidental bumping.
“Don’t worry. I’ll stay within your sight.”
Despite this, Daymond kept Anne close in front of him, protecting her with his large frame so she wouldn’t be swept by the crowd. He wanted to hold her tight, but she refused, saying she didn’t want to draw more attention in public.
“There’s so many amazing things to see here, I don’t know where to look first.”
Captivated by the exotic and unique scenery, Anne continuously expressed her admiration. The tight alleys of Yantilia had a charm of their own, and the shops, decorated in vibrant colors, were quaint. Anne’s eyes darted quickly, intrigued by the unfamiliar items in the shops.
While Anne was engrossed in exploring the city, Daymond couldn’t help but shoot hostile glances at every passing man. He regretted not staying in the mansion as Anne suddenly stopped in her tracks.
Daymond, stopped and turned his head. What caught her eye was a small accessory shop. There was a woman with long red hair neatly tied under a headscarf greeting them warmly.
“Welcome, esteemed guests.”
It was a necklace studded with colorful gems that caught Anne’s attention. She usually had no interest in jewelry so it was somewhat surprising given her usual indifference.
“Do you like it?”
“The colors are fascinating.”
Anne responded to Daymond’s question without shifting her gaze.
Known for her frugality even as a noble daughter, Anne preferred spending on books to gain knowledge or practical items rather than unnecessary luxuries.
Forced by her mother to dress extravagantly before her marriage, Anne had grown tired of ostentatious displays and regarded the extravagance of noblewomen as pitiful.
However, the jewels before her managed to captivate her.
“This necklace is made from coral stones collected from the depths of the ocean.”
“Coral?”
The woman, noticing the interest from her distinguished-looking customer, eagerly added.
“Yes, everything you see here is made from coral. It’s a jewel of the sea, known for its strong vitality that withstands even the harshest ocean waves.”
Anne’s eyes moved busily at the mention of strong vitality. The woman’s description further piqued her interest.
After showcasing white coral, pink-tinged coral, and the deepest red coral in turn, the woman held up a white coral necklace.
“This color would suit Madam the best.”
“Hmm. That color is pretty, but…”
Anne’s gaze, which had passed over various pieces of jewelry, finally settled on one particular necklace. The piece she had been attentively observing was a deep red coral necklace, instead of the one the seller recommended to her.
“I was thinking about this one…”
“I’m planning to buy it all anyway, but I think the white suits you better.”
While Anne looked stunning in any color, the pristine white coral seemed particularly fitting against her white neckline and white jade-like skin.
“Hmm. Still, I prefer the red coral. The color matches the color of your eyes perfectly.”
Anne lifted the necklace to his eye level with a bright smile.
The red coral glistened as it reflected the light. While Anne had always thought his eyes were akin to red rubies, it was the coral that was darker than ruby that truly mirrored the color of his eyes.
