I’ll Be The Warrior’s Mother - Chapter 284
‘So what?’
Even so, she wasn’t here right now.
And Countess Roda was confident in her own beauty.
Before and even after her marriage, few in social circles didn’t know of Countess Roda. Her rose-red hair. Her captivating violet eyes. How many men had tried to make her laugh with their silly jokes?
‘No man can resist a beauty.’
Especially when that beauty approaches them first.
Smiling, the Countess spoke to Kaywhin. Up close, he looked even more handsome than from afar, causing her heart to flutter.
“I’ve heard so much about you. They say you defeated a terrifying Demon King at Penel Fortress?”
She quickly dismissed the moments she had agreed with those who mocked the rumor.
“You’re truly amazing. Thank you for defeating the Demon King on our behalf.”
“……”
“I’d love to hear more details. How was it fighting the Demon King? At Pernel Fortress…”
Countess Roda trailed off.
Kaywhin wasn’t looking at her.
His gaze had shifted back towards the direction of the lounge.
“……!”
Seeing him so openly ignore her made the Countess’s eyelashes tremble in frustration.
For a moment, she clenched her fist, but quickly relaxed.
Right, it wouldn’t be easy. After all, he had been shunned by the nobility just a short while ago. Such sudden kindness might be too abrupt and unfamiliar to him.
The Countess’s eyes lingered on Kaywhin’s strong and firm-looking shoulders, wrapped in fine silk.
It was a classic move, but she was certain it would get his attention.
“Oh my, you seem to have some dust here…”
She reached out towards Kaywhin’s shoulder.
But just before her fingers made contact, Kaywhin shifted, dodging her touch.
Her ungloved hand clenched at the empty air in disappointment.
“……?”
Kaywhin had avoided her so naturally that, for a moment, Countess Roda didn’t even realize what had happened.
“My apologies, but I prefer not to be touched by anyone other than my wife.”
The voice, devoid of emotion and dry, snapped her back to reality a beat later.
Countess Roda’s face instantly turned bright red.
Her voice quivered with embarrassment and shame.
“Oh, it seems you misunderstood. I was merely trying to brush off some dust…”
“I don’t appreciate it, regardless of the reason. I hope you understand.”
Truthfully, it didn’t matter much to him.
Kaywhin didn’t particularly care if someone touched his shoulder, especially not in a casual setting or non-hostile context.
However, if another woman’s hand were to touch him, or even graze him, his wife wouldn’t appreciate it.
With that thought, Kaywhin naturally evaded Countess Roda’s touch. His mouth moved autonomously.
Feeling as though she had been treated like a germ, Countess Roda, overwhelmed by humiliation, quivered and swiftly turned away.
Walking out of the ballroom as if she intended to shatter the floor beneath her, the surrounding crowd’s stares and murmurs followed her.
Regardless, Kaywhin’s gaze remained focused on a single spot.
Soon, his eyes softened, filled with warmth.
“Yelena.”
With the tender tone and the smile that spread across his face, the surrounding ladies all had the same thought simultaneously.
‘How envious.’
Yelena, unaware or perhaps indifferent to the meaning behind the gazes directed at her, approached Kaywhin in her pale yellow dress.
However, up close, there was a subtle shadow on Yelena’s face.
Upon seeing her expression, Kaywhin hesitated.
“Kaywhin.”
Yelena grabbed his arm.
“Can we move somewhere else for a moment?”
As soon as they moved to a vacant terrace, following Yelena’s request, Kaywhin drew his sacred sword from his waist.
He then struck the terrace railing with the flat side of the sword.
Bang!
A drowsy, lingering voice echoed in Yelena’s mind.
[…What is it?]
‘Are you awake? If so, listen to what I have to say.’
[Yawn… What’s going on?]
‘The body of the Demon King has disappeared.’
Yelena recalled her conversation with Count Pernel.
After persistent inquiries, he had divulged the situation.
The Demon King’s body, stored in the vault, had vanished.
There were no signs of an external breach, so it likely wasn’t stolen, he added.
[So?]
‘So what if he has been resurrected?
What if he’s hiding by his own power?’
