I’ll Be The Warrior’s Mother - Chapter 283
The group that Countess Roda belonged to had been badmouthing and belittling Kaywhin until just before he made his appearance at the banquet. The Countess remembered every word that had been spoken at the time. She briefly scanned her surroundings. The Duchess, who had described Kaywhin as having an unpleasant appearance, was now staring blankly at him, so stunned that she couldn’t even think to pick up the fan she had dropped. The young aristocrat who had snickered that the Duchess had a preference for ugly men blinked repeatedly, his face flushing with embarrassment, perhaps regretting his earlier remarks. The young lady who had described Kaywhin’s large frame in negative terms, likening him to a beast, now blushed as she sneakily glanced at his broad shoulders. The reactions from the rest were mostly similar. They couldn’t be mocked, for the Countess herself was in the same situation.
After scanning her surroundings once more, the Countess’s eyes settled back on Kaywhin. She swallowed hard, an involuntary sigh of admiration escaping her lips. “If I had known he was such a handsome man sooner…” Countess Roda had married Count Roda last winter. It was a marriage chosen after sifting through dozens of proposals she had received over the year. The reason she chose Count Roda was simple: he was quite good-looking. With cool blue eyes and a suitably high nose, he had no shortcomings as a handsome man. The Countess had been satisfied with her husband’s appearance and often felt superior when looking at other wives. Until a moment ago, that is.
Countess Roda thought of her husband, who was currently confined to his territory due to work, and her mood suddenly soured. Regret welled up inside her, accompanied by a feeling of loss. Seeing the Duke of Meyhard, she couldn’t help but think she had chosen a chicken instead of a beautiful phoenix. “What a pity, such a pity.” Rumors and past stains no longer mattered.
The Countess, who had been angrily grinding her teeth against a glass goblet, suddenly lit up. She noticed Dennan, who had been chatting with Kaywhin, leaving his seat due to someone else’s call. Dennan was also quite handsome and would usually have captured the Countess’s attention. But now, all other men seemed insignificant next to Kaywhin. The Countess’s heart raced as she looked at Kaywhin, who was now alone. An opportunity, she thought. While both the Duke and she had already married, who said relationships between men and women were limited to marriage? The social circle was filled with lighter and more pleasurable relationships, and they weren’t viewed that negatively.
Putting down her wine glass, the Countess took a step. The wine was quite strong, and the slight inebriation gave her a boost of courage. As she approached Kaywhin, several young ladies and wives sighed with a sense of loss, as if a player had been snatched from them. The men looked at Kaywhin with a mix of envy, jealousy, and for some, a sense of defeat. “Duke Meyhard,” the Countess called out in a soft voice, stopping a step away from Kaywhin. However, there was no response. Kaywhin wasn’t even looking at her. His gaze was fixed in the direction of the lounge where Dennan had disappeared. “Did he not hear me?” she thought, raising her voice slightly. “Duke.” Still, there was no reply.
“Your Grace!”
It was only on the third call that his gaze met hers.
By then, Countess Roda’s voice had grown loud, almost as if she were shouting.
“Hmm, hmm.”
Quickly clearing her throat, the Countess lifted the corners of her eyes, offering a bright smile.
“It’s an honor to meet you, Duke Meyhard. I’m Eva Roda. Please, feel free to call me Lady Eva.”
“Countess Roda.”
‘He must know my husband.’
The Countess felt a small sting inside.
But it didn’t matter. After all, he had a wife too. Weren’t they in a similar situation?
Suddenly, Countess Roda recalled the woman who had entered the banquet hall with Kaywhin.
To be honest, she was beautiful. It was undeniable.
Her neatly cascading silver hair shimmered as if sprinkled with silver dust, and her pink eyes brimmed with a lively spirit reminiscent of spring. The dress that clung to her body before naturally flaring out made her look both elegant and innocent.
