Beast of the Frozen Night - Chapter 106.2
Anne made a gesture to Daymond, who was steadying her as she wobbled slightly.
“Since there’s no one around, you should take yours off too.”
“Me too?”
Anne nodded as if asking a rhetorical question. Looking pleased, Daymond willingly removed his shoes, and Anne stepped forward and linked her arm with his again.
The sound of the waves and the feel of the sandy beach under their feet were delightful. The wind brushing against her neck and the warm waves that occasionally washed over her feet were equally pleasant.
Anne waded through the salty water and looked towards the distant horizon. Tucking her windblown hair behind her ear, Anne spoke with a hint of regret.
“You mentioned earlier, about settling down here later on.”
“Yes, I did.”
“I like it here, but then I thought, it would be somewhat regrettable if we couldn’t see the white snow falling at all.”
Humans are drawn to unique things, and Anne was very fond of this place. Yet, she found the falling snowflakes from the sky equally beautiful, making it hard to choose between the two.
“And the only place you can enjoy hot springs on a snowy day is in the north.”
“You never wanted to go to the capital, but now you’ve become quite the northerner.”
“There’s a saying, isn’t there? Home is where the family is. Since my family is you and Eroel, I’m a northerner now.”
“Then it’s best if we spend half the year here.”
“Oh, yes. That would work.”
Anne agreed, her eyes widening as if it was the perfect solution. Enduring a week-long journey was a small price for arriving at such a beautiful destination.
Afterward, the couple strolled along the beach for a while and engaged in casual conversations about where to visit on the continent as they aged. Daymond couldn’t take his eyes off his wife, who was excited like a child.
A red sunset began to set over the blue sea, and gradually, the surroundings dimmed into darkness.
Anne and Daymond sat side by side on a large boulder leaning on each other’s shoulders and gazed at the sea. The quiet night breeze and the soft sound of the waves gently crashing filled their hearts with tranquility.
Anne’s long hair, cascading down her waist, fluttered like the waves that ebbed and flowed. Daymond, who was ever vigilant by her side, tidied her flowing blonde hair. Despite thinking him as someone quite presumptuous, Anne appreciated his caring gestures.
As Anne gently stroked his black hair tousled by the sea breeze, he closed his eyes in contentment, then opened them slowly.
“You’re not holding it against me for bringing us here on a whim, are you?”
Anne shook her head as he asked while leaning close enough to nearly touch her nose. She had ample leisure time and enjoyed lovely moments together with Daymond.
“It’s been the best. I feel like we’ve truly lived as a couple since getting married. And, not having to work but just enjoying our time together has been lovely. Maybe I should just leave everything to you and keep enjoying myself.”
Perhaps pleased with her answer, Daymond’s hand on her waist was gentle. Anne slowly closed her eyes in anticipation. expecting a kiss.
Yet, after a moment’s wait, there was no touch on her lips. Wondering why the man who usually seized every chance to kiss her remained still, Anne opened her eyes with a strange feeling. The eyes were clearer than ever before.
“Why do you look at me like that?”
His gaze was particularly ecstatic towards Anne. Profound and intense not just outwardly but seemingly reaching deep into her soul.
His look lingered for a while, wondering what he was thinking about. Reminiscent of the day he confessed his feelings in the greenhouse while burying the ring from the past.
“Is it okay to ask if you’re happy?”
“Why ask that all of a sudden?”
“I hope you’ve never regretted meeting me again in this life.”
The question was loaded with meaning, but Anne understood he was referring to their buried past. When she thought about her resentment towards him, it was now as distant as a barely remembered dream.
“Even if it sounds selfish, I never regret bringing you into my life. You were my first and will be my last and only woman.”
Ah, the answer Anne had wanted to hear the night before they left the Grand Duke’s castle flowed from him. She touched her heaving chest that was moved by his words. The red eyes met Anne’s blue eyes.
“And you?”
“I’m happy. I’m grateful to God for having been born. I wanted to know how you felt.”
He responded with an undertone of eager anticipation and closed the distance between him and Anne. His breath in her ear was hotter than the hot summer air.
His lips on her forehead were incredibly hot. It was a simple touch rather than a deep kiss only touching and falling, but it made all her senses rush to her face.
Next, his lips sought out the tip of Anne’s pointed nose. Finally as their lips made contact, Anne spoke up.
“I’m happy too. Truly.”
Facing his face illuminated by the moonlight, Anne smiled warmly.
A gentle wave seemed to ripple through his gaze that reflected Anne completely. His unwavering, upright eyes reflected her image. As he gazed at her for a long time as if capturing her smile in his eyes, he smiled very happily.
The red coral necklace around Anne’s neck softly sparkled under the moonlight.
