Seventy-nine Dragons (1)

Mu Wanwan saw the anticipation in Mister Long’s eyes and felt a bit afraid he might pull out more astonishing clothes. She tried to change the subject, “Your Majesty, why are there so many spirit stones on the floor?”

Mister Long pursed his lips, “Shiny.”

Mu Wanwan, “…”

She seemed to understand now. It turned out Mister Long really did have a fondness for shiny things.

After that brief and awkward conversation, the room fell silent again, only the occasional sound of Mengmeng sliding down the pile of spirit stones and its occasional chirps breaking the silence.

Mu Wanwan looked at the two suffocatingly gaudy dresses on the bed and couldn’t get past it in her mind. Although she could reluctantly say she liked them for the sake of love, what if Mister Long actually believed she liked them? She couldn’t accept his dreadful taste…

Mu Wanwan thought about how to delicately express her true feelings. She remained silent, and so did Mister Long.

He looked at her slightly reddened lips, feeling an itch in his heart. But then he remembered her slightly surprised expression when he first walked in. He bit his lip hard—

She must have seen his balding ears.

Mister Long knew his wife only liked fluffy things. Before he had revealed his furry ears, she had never been interested in petting him. But ever since he had shown those furry ears, her attitude had changed. Now, however, he was bald.

Would a dragon without fluff still hold any appeal for her, especially compared to Mengmeng?

His eyes grew dark; he wanted to ask if she disliked his ears now or who had given her the hairpin, but all that came out were dry, hollow words, “You… should get some more rest.”

Mu Wanwan, still stunned by the deathly Barbie pink dress, blinked, wondering if she had misheard.

She quickly looked up and met Mister Long’s cold eyes, his face as impassive as ever, and instinctively glanced at his ears. Then she realized—Mister Long had hidden his ears. But just looking at his face, she couldn’t gauge his feelings

Perhaps her gaze was too penetrating, or maybe Mister Long was particularly sensitive about his ears. His fragile heart seemed to have been shattered by her glance.

He turned his wheelchair away, lowering his gaze to the pile of spirit stones, looking like he was ready to start cultivating.

Mu Wanwan tugged at the expensive clothes on the bed. Her back still ached, and her soul was weary. She was uncomfortable, but it seemed all Mister Long was prepared to say was, “Get some more rest.”

She knew he had treated her wounds and him saying that was already a significant effort given his temperament.

But, he had just kissed her…

The lingering softness and warmth on her lips, his fingers gently brushing her cheek, these were all real.

She had thought that his return would mean he would no longer be so awkward and would clear everything up.

Was he really not going to explain anything unless she asked? She remembered how, during all those days of waiting, every sound outside had made her jump like a startled bird.

The note had clearly said he would return in three to five days, yet he had broken that promise. Did he think that giving her a room full of spirit stones and two dresses could make her forget the countless days and nights of anxious waiting?

As the initial joy of their reunion and the relief that he was safe began to fade, Mu Wanwan glanced at the hairpin Jiu Qing had given her, placed on the table. For the first time, she allowed herself to throw a small tantrum.

She took off the hairpin Mister Long had put on her, smoothed her hair, and put on the one Jiu Qing had given her, then she threw the covers over herself and said, “I’m going to sleep.”

After speaking, she felt a wave of grievance wash over her. Her eyes started to sting, and she quickly shut them, trying to hold back the tears.

The room fell silent again. Mister Long’s lips twitched, his eyes showing a flash of hurt. She preferred the hairpin given by someone else over the one he had given her.

His long lashes lowered, hiding the turmoil raging inside. The reflection of the spirit stones in his eyes looked like tiny flames.

Perhaps the aura of malevolence around him had already formed a terrifying black vortex. Mengmeng, who had been happily munching on the shiny stones, suddenly felt a chill of fear. The memory of almost being swatted to death by the dragon yesterday still lingered above Mengmeng’s fluffy head. Carefully, it moved its chubby little body and managed to escape through the window before the dragon’s wrath could manifest.

Mister Long noticed Mengmeng’s movements but ignored it, his expression dark and foreboding.

He stared at the hairpin Mu Wanwan wore on purpose, which was clearly visible, his knuckles turning white from the tight grip on the arms of the wheelchair.

About an hour later, Mu Wanwan, who had been waiting to see if the stubborn dragon would say anything, couldn’t hold on any longer. Her soul was exhausted, making it easy for her to fall asleep.

In her half-asleep, half-awake state, she heard the grating sound of the wheelchair moving across the smooth floor. The noise was so jarring that it woke her up immediately.
