I’ll Become the Female Lead in this Trashy Webnovel - Chapter 90.1
90. This is driving me insane. Truly. (1)
Swept up in the atmosphere, I impulsively confessed my feelings for him. “Do you always change your mind so quickly?”
A response twisted like a doughnut, came back. Within his gaze, there seemed to be a cold, wintry wind swirling. It was an unexpectedly cold response to a heartfelt confession. Yet, Sohee wasn’t hurt. Not because she was sure of his feelings, but because she felt such a reaction was anticipated.
When she first possessed the body, she recklessly confessed her feelings multiple times — so many times she couldn’t even count them on her fingers — all in an attempt to claim her position as the protagonist. This was the expected outcome of her previous actions.
Knowing this, Sohee wasn’t waiting for a sweet response to her confession. She had confirmed that Joshua had feelings for Ariad. So, her confession wouldn’t be a burden to him; she was merely speaking her mind.
“I just wanted to tell you that I like you.”
He averted his gaze. Joshua quickly turned his head, staring out of the window. The colorful fireworks illuminated the sharp contours of his face. The statue-like figure, transfixed by the night’s fireworks, slowly began to speak. “You’ll probably run away again soon, won’t you?”
Amid the deafening sound of the fireworks, his soft voice was distinctly audible. Sohee chose not to respond. She already knew there were lingering feelings. There was no need to pursue him desperately. Like rain slowly soaking through clothes, she decided to give him time, letting feelings naturally develop. That was Sohee’s resolution. Slowly. Gently. Approaching without overwhelming him. Although she could sense his intense gaze upon her, he continued to ignore her. Suddenly, Sohee yearned to capture that intense gaze that had been so deliberately turned away from her.
“Joshua.” Upon hearing Sohee’s call, he slowly turned his head in her direction. The glow from the last firework lit up his statue-like face — so strikingly handsome that one would find it hard to hold back words. As their eyes locked, Sohee, seemingly spellbound, uttered, “I like you.” She blurted it out and then recalled the promise she had made to herself just moments earlier. So much for taking things slow. She rationalized: Why hesitate when they already knew their mutual feelings? “I do like you, alright?”
“Enough with this nonsense. Come out now.” Joshua made a hasty exit from the room as if escaping. Sohee immediately chased after him. “I like you!”
She shouted at his retreating, which bore the urgency of someone being pursued. Her hearty confession echoed down the corridor. Because of his long strides, she soon struggled to keep pace.
As the gap between them widened, Sohee, catching her breath, slowed down. “It looks like I’ve done something wrong.”
She understood Joshua’s sentiments. He did have feelings for Ariad, yet after hearing a heartfelt confession, he’d bolted. Perhaps he was fearful, thinking she might vanish someday. The challenge now was to alleviate that fear. It wouldn’t be easy, but she had to instill a genuine assurance that she would remain by his side. This newly established goal invigorated Sohee’s resolve.
She strolled to the entrance of the banquet hall, scanning for Joshua. Peering through the slight opening of the hall doors, she noted the celebration had concluded and staff were tidying up. Seeing no sign of him inside, she turned away. “Did he genuinely leave on his own?”
Stepping outside and still finding no trace of him, Sohee muttered in frustration. A few remaining nobles were gathered outside the building.
Watching others busily exchange greetings, Sohee’s gaze settled upon a familiar figure. The deep and vivid blue hair shimmered under the lights, his cheeks adorably puffing up when he smiled; even by his silhouette alone, she could recognize him.
“…Hugh?” He was alive and had returned entirely unscathed from a battlefield filled with casualties. Even outside of warfare, there were many situations where Hugh could be in danger.
If Joshua had the will, getting rid of him in front of Ariad wouldn’t have been a difficult task. Yet, Joshua hadn’t laid a finger on him, even though the sight of a man who had been intimate with Ariad would surely irritate him.
