Is the Friend of a Friend a Stranger? - Chapter 47.1
It was a cold remark. At least to say to a younger brother who had tried all his life to have just one better quality than his older brother.
But Heston was often like that. He judged the world by his own standards. He would often say that it was natural to do as much as he did, and that it wasn’t that difficult. Of course, most people judged the world by their own standards, but in Heston’s case, it was a problem because of his high qualities.
Heston always treated the world with dedication, honesty, and integrity, and thus imprinted his existence. However, Lewis, who was unable to keep up with Heston in such a way, decided to prove his qualities by being more loyal than anyone else to the aristocratic society that avoided responsibility and used flattery to pave its way.
Sylvia thought of a time when Heston worried about Lewis, who was too attached to the prince and was acting almost like his dog, and said that it was too dangerous to risk everything on one person.
At that moment, Lewis, who was staggering due to the alcohol he was forced to drink because of the prince, grabbed his brother by the collar and shouted angrily,
‘You may think it’s not like an heir to the duke to be doing this, but this is what they do. You’re just living as you please.’
Sylvia didn’t like him either, but sometimes when she saw his movements, she felt a little sad because there was something desperate about them.
But of course, it wasn’t Lewis who worried about this, but Heston, who lived with great resentment toward his family. She knew it just by looking at him, taking headache medicine while drawing a line saying that it was something that Lewis had to deal with. She knew that Heston was definitely struggling with this.
“I think it would be best if you contacted him in advance. It’s better than coming across it in the newspaper.”
“No matter what I do, he’s going to find something insulting. I don’t want to provoke his anger first.”
Heston raised his hand as if to stop talking about this now. Then, someone knocked on the door as if they had been waiting.
“Come in.”
Heston gave permission to the visitor who didn’t even identify himself, and Sylvia turned her head because she wondered who it was for Heston to be like this. She quietly opened her mouth to the familiar face as that person opened the door and entered.
“Owen?”
“Yeah. I called him because I had something to say.”
Seeing Sylvia’s pale expression, Owen shrugged as if it wasn’t his fault. Heston calmly beckoned Owen to take a seat, and this uncomfortable meeting made Sylvia feel like her lunch was sitting heavy on her stomach.
A three-person meeting with Owen and Heston?
She hadn’t committed any sins, but she desperately wanted to avoid facing each other like this. She really hated meeting Owen in front of Heston, and she hated meeting Heston in front of Owen.
Sylvia scratched the back of her hand as it suddenly felt ticklish. Meanwhile, Heston was having a peaceful conversation with Owen.
“Are you feeling better?”
“I’ve gotten better a while ago. You’re so busy that we only met now.”
“I’m sorry. For summoning a sick person like this.”
“Not at all. By the way, there was no need to even call a priest to treat me. Did you pay for the treatment?”
“Of course, I have to do that much. We’re friends.”
Heston’s last words struck her heart. It was even echoing.
‘We’re friends,’ ‘we’re friends…’
In fact, Owen and Sylvia were a step away from being called friends of a friend. Since each of them had a relationship with Heston, Sylvia had no way of knowing how Heston and Owen would talk to each other when they were alone.
In other words, it was very rare for the three of them to get together in one place.
There were many occasions when Owen, who had no residence in the capital, was invited to Heston’s mansion and stayed there for months, but she rarely encountered him even when she visited the mansion.
As the three of them gathered and she listened to the conversation between Owen and Heston, she felt an unknown sense of shame tightening her throat.
What in the world had she done? Having an unrequited love for Heston wasn’t enough, she even had to bring Owen into this.
She had no idea how much Heston would despise her if he knew all of this. If someone liked her and she found out that person had slept with her one and only friend, Sylvia would surely think that person was a damn asshole.
‘Am I not enough that you even go to my friend? Are you thinking of me while sleeping with my friend?’
Sylvia’s face turned pale when she thought of Heston looking at her with a disgusted expression. That was how her determination to get over the situation in a dignified way came to an end. Heston realized that she was quite uncomfortable with this situation when he saw her face, which seemed unusual.
