Little Terrified Bun - Chapter 93
“Enough, enough, I know what you mean.” The old man’s already hunched back hunched even more, his troubled eyes filled with fatigue. “But as you can see, your second sister in law and I are already so old, we are not considering adopting another child. We can’t afford it! Can’t afford it!”
“Second brother, what are you saying?” The woman’s voice suddenly turned shrill. “It’s because you guys are aging that you should adopt another one. Isn’t there a saying that goes ‘raise children to provide for one’s old age.”
As if the woman realized her reaction was excessive, she let out a reluctant laugh and continued tactfully, “If you accidentally get bumped or hit somewhere, and can’t move around freely in the future, my A’gen can provide some care. Also, with only the two of you in this house, it’s quite lonely. It would be more lively if there was a child.”
“I’m an old woman! I like quietness.” The old woman who had kept silent started to speak in a deliberate way, “How can others rest if it’s so noisy?”
The old man, who was originally hesitating, let out a soft sigh. He put down the newspaper on his hands and flattened the creases on it. “I think the same as my wife. We really don’t need this child.” He was older now. He didn’t have much energy and he did everything slowly.
Upon acknowledging the woman’s unfinished thoughts, the old man directly casted them out. “Enough, you guys can leave! I still need to go to my class, and we have nothing to greet you at home. There’s no need to discuss this further.”
“Second brother, you have to think twice about it. Don’t just blindly listen to Second Sister-in-law. No matter what, A’gen still shares the same bloodline as you, so what’s the difference?” The woman stared at the old woman secretly, wishing that she could rip her apart. Meanwhile, she secretly resented her second brother for not having his own thoughts, and only listening to a woman.
“Leave, leave!” The old man only felt his heart ache. “A’gen is my nephew, and he will only be my nephew.”
The two of them dragged on some more, until the woman finally acknowledged the resolve of the old man, and left with her son unwillingly. Once they stepped out of the residential district, her hand went straight to the younger son’s body with a slap. “Why are you so insensible? Playing with Chen Kun’s memorial tablet? Is that something you can touch freely?”
“…Aiyo! Mom!” A’gen impatiently rubbed the spot where he was hit and replied confidently, “I already apologized. What else do aunt and uncle want? I just scratched it a couple of times with a pocket knife, it wasn’t even visible.”
“You brat.” The woman sneered while agreeing with his words inwardly. The tablet didn’t even break, and they made such a big deal out of it.
A’gen actually felt angry too.
Why did they choose to offer him up for adoption? Why not big brother? His parents were biased; they only loved big brother and not him.
If that was the case, the woman also felt wronged.
She has two sons; her older son was only two years away from graduating from college and her younger son was only fourteen, still in 8th grade. The youngster didn’t study as well as his big brother. It was a terrible mess, which led the woman to think that since her older son could start earning money soon, she could give the younger son to her second brother. That way, not only can he inherit his inheritance, but can also save the huge costs of tuition and textbooks.
How nice?
“Humph! I’m old, but my heart is still clear.” The old woman who was knitting a sweater threw the things on her hand to the sofa. “Don’t they just want our money? I’m telling you, we can adopt anyone else, just not from her household.”
“Enough, enough, how many times have you said this. I’m going to class.” The old man put on a thick jacket and put a small wallet into his pocket. “Don’t be angry, it won’t be good if your health is affected.”
The old man was a teacher in a nearby high school, and could retire in two years.
They didn’t come from a wealthy family, but because their old house was demolished for government use, not only did they get a house in the new residential district, they also got a large sum of compensation.
Before, when they didn’t have much savings, his younger sister had already wanted to give her son to them for the two old houses. Now that they got the subsidy, her family became more persistent. The old man had considered the choice previously because he was old afterall, if they had a child, they would have more hope.
That was why he wanted to bring the child home first, to bond with him.
Who would’ve thought that the child was naughty and insensible. Could things like memorial tablets be played with freely? He didn’t even think that he was wrong after touching it, making the two elders so mad that they almost coughed blood. As a result, the thought of adoption was delayed.
The sky outside the window was blue. The old woman sat up and walked to the balcony. Her rough palms rubbed against the old rocking chair as an imaginative child appeared before her eyes. The child had beautiful eyes and nice looking facial features, with a dimple on the corner of his mouth when he smiled. He had a reserved personality, so he would hide behind her when he saw strangers.
Gradually…the boy grew into a lively teenager, then a mature young adult…
