Odalisque - Chapter 269
She was feeling sorry. She knew how much Demus, who was usually plagued by nightmares, found Liv’s presence comforting, and she also knew that Demus was having a severe anxiety because of her escape.
“Were you surprised?”
Liv asked worriedly, and Demus replied, sweeping a hand through his disheveled hair.
“Yeah.”
Demus had become quite good at acting weak in this short time. However, Liv was still not immune to his weak side and often took him seriously when he said something that was uncharacteristic of him. That was evident in the way she was surprised.
As Liv scooted closer to the side of the bed to study his complexion, Demus reached out and wrapped his hands around her waist as if he’d been waiting for it. Liv’s body, which had been defenseless, immediately collapsed on top of Demus.
Her body heat beneath her chemise warmed his hands.
Demus felt his mouth water. Even though they fucked every day, the desire inside him was never satiated and seemed to grow its size.
His lustful hands slid down her slender waistline. As he squeezed her round ass, Liv let out a sound between a sigh and a moan.
“But you won’t let me do this if the hired help comes in and out, will you?”
“… That’s obvious.”
Liv, her face turning bright red, replied in a small but firm voice. It was the answer Demus had already guessed.
She was not the kind of open person who would display her affection in public, and she would be even less inclined to do so, given the psychological distance she still felt towards the hired help of the Lanxess manor.
Perhaps it was because they had made their relationship so apparent through their noisy escapades and chases?
Demus’ men and hired hands seemed to be quite keen on Liv, sometimes too much so. It was apparent that they were afraid that if Liv’s emotions were to be twisted, the same thing would happen again.
In particular, they were over with their assistant when things seemed to be going well between Demus and Liv. It was like they were telling her to never think about anything else.
Liv found the whole thing a burden, but Demus didn’t try to stop them. In fact, he was quite pleased with them. He guessed that Philip would have police the hired help himself. That was the way of a seasoned butler.
Anyway, the point was that it was difficult to get hired help in the bedroom.
Liv would certainly change her nightgown immediately if the hired help were to enter the bedroom to wake them up. Not this see-through silk chemise she was wearing now, but a stuffy nightgown that came down to her ankles.
“It can’t be helped then.”
Demus clicked his tongue in a rueful tone.
“We’ll just have to leave the curtains open.”
There was no importance in closing the bedroom curtains. It was absolutely more important to open his eyes and see Liv beside him.
Nuzzling his head against the nape of Liv’s neck, Demus let out a long breath.
It was the start of a peaceful morning.
***
Damn Buerno.
Demus realized he’d better take back what he said about peace.
Sitting with his arms crossed, Demus reflected. He shouldn’t have come back to this Buerno in the first place. He should have just settled in Adelinde as he had bought a mansion there.
He’d come back because he couldn’t stand the sight of people gossiping about Liv and always portraying her as a cheap mistress, and he’d deliberately treated her so dearly for all to see.
He wanted to prove to them that all the rumors were false, and to give them a stern warning that they should never say anything like that again.
He knew that the attitudes of the people in Buerno would change upon seeing this. Such is the nature of human beings. In social circles, especially, it was an essential virtue to be able to be shameless.
Even so, shouldn’t one know some decency?
“The Vendons?”
It had been since they fired Liv, yet now they sent an invitation?
“An invitation from Millian, to be precise.”
“There’s no way the Baron and Baroness Vendons wouldn’t have checked the letter that she sent to my mansion.”
Demus, who had spoken in a gruff voice, glanced at the letter in Liv’s hand. No doubt the Baron and Baroness, who would have been embarrassed to say they regretted their decision now, must have put their daughter as a last resort.
That letter must have been made with great effort to make a connection with the woman the Marquis of Dietrion was so infatuated with.
“A novel reading out of the blue? It’s obviously a ploy.”
Worse, the date was tomorrow. What a disrespectful invitation!
