Chapter 3: He’s Changed

The wind and snow all seemed to suddenly stop at this moment.

Qin Jue stared at her in a daze. Her bright smile brought the whole surrounding warmer by a few degrees and even the hand she extended to him felt as if it carried the light.

He should be feeling thankful. Because no matter what, she was here to rescue him. But when he looked at that hand extended toward him, he only wanted to burst out laughing. And so he did…

What type of sick joke is this? This whole trip, how many times had he longed for salvation? How many times had he cried out for help? Why is it only when he had completely given up hope that someone extended their hand to him?

So should he be grateful? Was he not allowed to be resentful of this situation?

If he acted stubborn in this situation, would it be the same as ending his life?

As his body reached its limit and his consciousness began to fade, he used the last bit of strength to lift his hand…wanting to push away Xie Lin Lang’s hand!

Little did he know, the moment he had lifted his hand, Xie Lin Lang had already grabbed his hand!

His eyes startled open, and without warning, he was pulled into Xie Lin Lang’s direction!

Because of his body’s weakened state, this simple pull made him stumble directly into her embrace, causing both sides to pause in silence…Being in her embrace, Qin Jue felt as if he was being hauled out of somewhere by someone. It was at that brief moment that his body escaped from a very cold place…

Xie Lin Lang held onto him with both arms subconsciously and stumbled a few steps back. His body was frozen and stiff as if she was holding onto an ice sculpture.

“Are you alright?” Her tone became increasingly alarmed.

Qin Jue’s head leaned against Xie Lin Lang’s shoulder without speaking for a while. Just when Xie Lin Lang thought he had already fainted, she heard his soft but stubbornly spoken words.

“…I…won’t trust you one bit.”

Upon hearing his statement, Xie Lin Lang was stunned and then a little dumbfounded.

But before she could reply, Qin Jue had already completely lost consciousness. Seeing his state, Xie Lin Lang couldn’t help but smile softly.

She spoke quietly, “It’ll probably be better if you trusted me.”

She patted his shoulders, and in a very melancholic tone, “Because other than me, all of the people you can trust are already gone…But I still have to say thank you. Thank you for staying alive for this long.”

Was this not a part of luck? Perhaps it might even be heaven’s will.

……

No one expected Xie Lin Lang’s appearance. A widely anticipated young person like her had no business throwing her future in the capital away and coming this far out. So what was she doing?

But she was here anyway. And as soon as she arrived, she stumbled upon a scene that she never should have seen.

Xie Lin Lang handed Qin Jue over to Xiao Xi and turned towards them. But before she could say anything, one person from the crowd began to cry.

“Xie DaRen* please! Xie DaRen please save us!”

*大人 DaRen–A title used to address someone with high ranks or addressing high officials.

“Oh?” She raised an eyebrow, then looked at them. “If you have the guts to murder the Crown Prince, why do you still need me to save you?”

Hearing her words, everyone got down on their knees, and one of the guards shouted out.

“Brilliant Xie DaRen! It wasn’t us that tried to kill His Highness! It was His Highness, he- he poisoned us!”

“That poison was exceptionally cruel. So cruel that every time it activated, it seemed as if the only solution was to pull our skin off…Because of this, we all hated him to the point that we held up our swords at him. We were all forced!”

His words made Xie Lin Lang laugh. Ah, so these people have been poisoned…that just made everything much easier.

She looked down in thought for a moment, then shook her head.

“I don’t believe you. What reason could a kind and gentle person like His Highness have to poison you? After all, you’re the people in charge of escorting him to Xiang City. If you died, did he hope to walk by himself the whole way there?

Besides, what’s the use of begging me to save you from poison? I’m just a simple scholar. It’s not as if I am a miracle doctor that can cure all poison. I suggest you all just kneel here for now, and we’ll discuss this once His Highness is awake again.”

Finished, she turned back to her carriage, wanting to check up on Qin Jue’s situation. But a voice called out from behind her.

“Xie DaRen!”

Her foot paused its movement before she entered the carriage.

The guard lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot and his face was covered in blood.

“Although I had never personally known his majesty in the past. But, it’s best if Xie DaRen doesn’t simply believe he’s still that innocent and harmless Crown Prince now!”

The people here are the best evidence and so is the corpse of that official on the floor! The Crown Prince is a monster! He is a demon in human disguise!

Xie Lin Lang frowned upon hearing this, then chuckled as she shook her head.

They used all sorts of torture techniques on this young boy. Ignoring the fact that defying the Emperor’s orders was already a death sentence, no matter what method Qin Jue chose to retaliate with would have been within human nature for him to fight back.

She had already spared them from punishment solely because Qin Jue has already been tormented enough, and he’ll need an outlet to release that anger. But these people couldn’t possibly think she’ll also protect them?

How absurd.
