Chapter 1: Transmigrated to Become a Winner In Life
4th Year of Yuan Calendar, Winter Solstice.
Making her way through the harsh snowstorm, Xie Lin Lang finally arrived in front of the ransacked Xia family mansion.
Momentarily, she lets out a long sigh, “Looks like we still didn’t make it in time”.
Her servant Xiao Xi comforted, “Don’t be too disappointed, GongZi, it’s not your fault. If it wasn’t for the Northern territory being far away or the heavy snowstorm blocking the road, we wouldn’t have taken this long. Maybe it’s heaven’s will…”
*书童 [shū tóng] –a boy serving in a scholar’s study.
*公子 GongZi–typically used to address a young man of a wealthy background.
*Xie Lin Lang cross-dresses as a male to the world, but she is female.
“Heaven’s will?” Xie Lin Lang sneered and shook her head. The road is far for sure, and snowstorms are normal, but the ambush of bandits and her horse being poisoned to death? Didn’t seem like heaven’s will to her. It was more like someone didn’t want her to return.
She tapped the jade fan in the palm of her hand, then suddenly turned and walked back towards her carriage.
Taken aback, Xiao Xi quickly followed behind her, “GongZi, GongZi, where are you going?”
After settling in the carriage, she explained firmly, “First we’ll go check in with his majesty, then go repay the favor that I owe.”
“The favor?” Xiao Xi was a little confused. Empress Xia was already dead and the Xia family had been eliminated. Who was left for her to repay the favor? He asked these questions in a low voice.
Brushing the snow off her shoulders, Xie Lin Lang answered, “The Xia family is gone, but Her Majesty’s son is still alive.”
“GongZi, you don’t mean… the decrowned Crown Prince Qin Jue? But he was already exiled to Xiang City half a month ago…”
Hearing his words, Xie Lin Lang briefly glanced out the window. With a spark in her eyes she answered, “Then we’ll just have to follow him there, and find him.”
*
Around this time, multiple rumors had been spreading throughout the cities and streets.
In just a few months’ time, the Xia family was accused of treason and the entire clan was annihilated. The Emperor ordered seven consecutive imperial decrees to eliminate Empress Xia and the fourteen-year-old Crown Prince after their escape.
Who would’ve known that after half a month, the Crown Prince showed up alone unexpectedly, carrying the Empress’ corpse with him…
Then, in front of all the imperial officials, he wrote a letter of confession, admitted to all of his crimes, and only requested that the Empress be able to keep her title and be buried in the imperial mausoleum.
The Emperor allowed it. Although the Emperor had planned on having him killed, for some reason, he only dismissed Qin Jue’s Crown Prince title and exiled him from the capital, not to return unless summoned.
The alarming waves of news created an intense atmosphere throughout the capital. Only beginning today did the mood start lightening up again – because Xie Lin Lang has returned!
Xie Lin Lang was Qin Nation’s famous child prodigy. At eight years old, ‘he’ could already paint and write. At nine years old, ‘he’ read classical literature with ease and became even more proficient at ten years old. After taking part in the imperial examination, instead of progressing rank by rank, ‘he’ became the first in history to advance straight to the position of the Nation’s Number One Scholar!
After that, ‘he’ invented a better way of crafting paper, making it so that paper didn’t break as easily. Then, ‘he’ invented chairs and tables, and people stopped sitting on the ground to eat. During summertime, ‘he’ even invented a way to make ice. This way, people no longer need to store ice during winter. As long as they have the money, they are able to eat shaved ice any time of the year.
Because of ‘his’ various talents and intelligence, the Emperor began assigning ‘him’ a considerable amount of missions. Yet no matter the type of missions ‘he’ is assigned, ‘he’ will always complete them perfectly.
All at the same time, ‘he’ is favored by the Emperor, is the Royal Preceptor’s favorite disciple, is the role model that all the royal officials use to educate their children, is the common people’s model official, and is all the maidens’ dream lover.
‘He’ completely avoided any part of the chaos that took place during the half-year ‘he’ was traveling in the Northern territories. If ‘he’ is returning at this moment, doesn’t that indicate the turmoil is ending?
On the way into the palace, Xie Lin Lang sat quietly in her carriage, listening to the fleeting gossips from outside while playing with her Buddha bead bracelet.
When she first transmigrated to Qin Nation, this body was only seven years old. This Qin Nation* is also different from the state of Qin that we know of, but rather a nation existing in another universe.
*Qin Guo (秦国) in Chinese means state of Qin, one of the seven states of the Warring States Period.
When she first arrived, she was almost killed the same way that the original owner of this body was killed. Fortunately, she was saved by Empress Xia, who helped her change her name and surname, giving her a different identity and allowing her to restart as a man in this world.
Perhaps the process of saving her life and creating a new identity is nothing but a simple act of kindness for the Empress, but for Xie Lin Lang, the magnitude of this act is immeasurable!
After that, she used her newly gained identity to become the disciple of the Imperial Preceptor, mainly based on the fact that his family is the head of the aristocratic families, allowing her to easily pursue her ambitions.
If she wanted to repay the favor to the Empress, she would require a position with authority. In order to do that, becoming the Imperial Preceptor’s disciple was the obvious shortcut.
But who would’ve known…
Xie Lin Lang tightened her grip on the beads.
…Who would’ve known that in order to keep her from helping the Empress and the Crown Prince and meddling in this affair, the Imperial Preceptor would send her to the North to relieve disaster in advance!
The connections she built in the last few years were all based on her relation to the Imperial Preceptor so it’s no wonder that when she received the news, it already was too late. Even though she spent the utmost effort avoiding various obstacles and rushing back to the Capital, the stage had already been set.
But if the Imperial Preceptor simply thought this would deter her, then he must really be underestimating her determination.
If she can’t save the Empress and the Xia family, she can still go rescue the Crown Prince! So what if he is decrowned and exiled? She will chase after him regardless and give him everything she has to offer!
So Qin Jue… you must stay alive…
