Chapter 7: How Will I Have a Past If I Have No Future
The next day, Qin Jue made and gave out the antidote as promised.
The guards were deeply grateful for receiving the antidote. After taking the medicine, the group of people harboring various thoughts continued making their way down South, and a couple more days passed by.
From his actions these days, Qin Jue was shown to be very capable of hiding his true feelings.
After hearing the guards’ plan, Xie Lin Lang went and told Qin Jue. But after hearing this news, he didn’t change what he had been doing nor did he ask for her help. It was he would naturally be able to take care of those people when the time came.
But Xie Lin Lang couldn’t understand his intentions. How can he escape completely unscathed once the two groups joined forces…Could all this calmness that he’s showing just be him bluffing that he has a plan?
If so, should she give him a chance to ask for her help then?
Thus, Xie Lin Lang softly cleared her throat, “Actually I was thinking, there’s no need to make a bet between us because if you win, your enemies will become alert of you. If you lose, it’ll put us in a tougher situation.
Since winning or losing the bet will both do us no good, how about we just invalidate it?
I’ll tell Xiao Xi to take us away and we can call for reinforcements, then eliminate them altogether. How does that sound?”
She thought that Qin Jue would agree with the suggestion right away, but instead, he simply flipped a page of the book in his hand and said calmly.
“The bet continues.”
This made Xie Lin Lang a little puzzled. Her method was clearly the simplest and most straightforward, yet why was Qin Jue still so adamant about continuing the bet?
So she asked in a low voice, “Can you tell me why? My method clearly is more productive, so why do you still insist on doing it yourself and alerting the enemies?”
She paused, lowering her voice even more, “If your enemies were to see you being so powerful, it will be even more unlikely for you to return to the Capital. Wouldn’t it be harder for you to take revenge this way?”
Hearing her question, Qin Jue looked at her in surprise, “Who said I wanted to return to the Capital?”
As if it was the most obvious thing, Xie Lin Lang said, “Your enemies are all in the Capital at the top of the power hierarchy. If you’re eager to take revenge on them in the fastest way, isn’t the best method going back to the capital, taking back your title, and becoming the emperor?”
Qin Jue smiled softly when he heard her words and put his book down.
“So what Lin Lang is telling me is that I should suppress my resentment, return to being the Emperor’s favorite, and then suppress my anger every step of the way up, until the day I become Emperor, then finally take my revenge?”
Xie Lin Lang nodded. Although Qin Jue had been decrowned, it was not an uncommon situation for a decrowned Crown Prince to be recrowned again. This would undoubtedly be the fastest solution.
Seeing her thought process, Qin Jue’s face grew mocking.
“Why do you think I’m so persistent to the throne? It’s not as if that’s the only way to take my revenge.”
Xie Lin Lang frowned, “…Didn’t you say this yourself?”
Qin Jue was taken aback, and Xie Lin Lang continued.
“Ever since you were little, you emphasized harshly self-discipline, hard work, and knowledge. Other than not wanting to disappoint Her Majesty, wasn’t it so you could become someone who can contribute to the prosperity of the people?
For a long time, the person you admire most is the founder Emperor Qin Ye and your favorite literature was ‘Strategies to Rule a Nation’.
The one and only time you had gotten drunk, you told me that if you had the chance, you aspire to become like Qin Ye, an otherworldly emperor that is both powerful in his combat, and also fluent in his politics and literature! To reach that goal, you have been trying your best this whole time, not daring to take a break…”
“Enough!”
He suddenly interrupted her, slamming his hand on the table and crunching up the thin ‘Discussion on People’s Livelihoods’ book he was reading into a ball!
“Enough…”
She was right, he had said all of that. In the past, his wish was indeed to become someone even more impressive than the founding Emperor, to create a truly peaceful and prosperous age. But that was all in the past!
Now, he has stopped dreaming…
Seeing this type of reaction, Xie Lin Lang paused, and lowered her voice, “So, you’re planning on rejecting everything you’ve done and forgetting it all in the past?”
The heavy air around him thickened even more. Raising an eyebrow, he sneered,
“I don’t even have a future. How can I have a past?”
As soon as he said this, the atmosphere in the carriage immediately dropped to a freezing point. At this time, the sound of rapid horse galloping came from outside, simultaneously, the guards began yelling out alerts loudly!
“Alert! There of assassins!”
They’re here!
Both Xie Lin Lang and Qin Jue thought at the same time.
The next moment, the sound of killing and shouting shook the land!
Hearing the movement, Xie Lin Lang immediately raised the curtain to see what was happening outside. Amidst the chaos of frantic guards and startled horses were a group of masked horse riders speeding their way in this direction!
Along with them came the clouds of dust in the air and murderous intent. It wouldn’t take too long until the two forces soon clashed!
Amid the chaos, the temporarily elected guard leader Zhang Yong stepped forward and reported, “Xie Lin Lang DaRen! The enemies are coming in overwhelming forces and in large numbers. To ensure your safety, please take His Highness and escape first. We will take care of them!”
With a deep look, Xie Lin Lang asked, “Then what about you all?”
Hearing her question, Zhang Yong answered loudly with enthusiasm, “As personal guards, our sole duty is to protect His Highness and to fight with our life on the line. So don’t worry about us and let His Highness go first, his safety is the most important!”
Seeing his attitude, Xie Lin Lang heaved, finally saying, “Then you be careful too.”
After speaking, she told Xiao Xi to go first and leave these guards behind.
Xiao Xi nodded and left on the horse. At this time, the assassins had already gotten to them and were now clashing with the soldiers. As expected, the guards began fighting with their lives to create an opportunity for Xie Lin Lang to escape.
Xie Lin Lang’s horse carriage broke through and began heading away. However, no one noticed that at the back of the carriage, someone had opened the trunk door wide open…
Qin Jue watched the chaotic battlefield. He calmly took the set of bow and arrow from off the wall and fired at the crowd!
That single arrow landed on one of the masked assassins. Due to the injury on his right hand, he lacked the strength to sink the arrow deep and the assassin was able to immediately pull it out. With both eyes of fury, he turned towards Qin Jue’s direction. Coincidentally, Qin Jue was also looking at him…
Beyond the flying dust particles in the air, Qin Jue remained in the archery posture, with his left hand still holding the bow. His hand that fired the arrow hadn’t been lowered as well.
But his expression was strange. It was as if he was laughing, but at the same time, looking at them pitifully. By the time the assassin was able to react, the horse carriage was already far away.
As Xiao Xi galloped on his horse beside the carriage, he spoke to Xie Lin Lang, “GongZi, who would’ve thought that they really dared to do it! What should we do next? Which direction should we head to avoid being trapped by them?”
Xie Lin Lang held onto the carriage shaft, calmly speaking, “We head back.”
“Back where?”
“Back to the main road where we came from!”
“But…” Xiao Xi was very puzzled, “But that’s where the guards and assassins had planned to trap us. If we go back, aren’t we throwing ourselves into their trap?”
She shook her head, “I’m not telling you to go straight back, we’ll take a detour by going on the hills next to the main road. I need to go back and see their situation.”
Xiao Xi finally agreed to turn back, albeit not completely understanding the situation. “GongZi, are you afraid we have misunderstood the guards?”
Xie Lin Lang shook her head, looking at the carriage behind her, “…I just want to know how he planned on winning the bet.”
She was very curious to see how Qin Jue planned to solve this matter, so much that he insisted on continuing the bet. Just what is he planning?
