Chapter 9: I Won’t Let You Be Alone From Now On
In front of her, Qin Jue still held that shallow and cold smile.
The reason he insisted on the bet was so he could show Xie Lin Lang the real him, just so she could see how dark and cruel he’s become! This way, wouldn’t she become so disappointed and angry that she ran off?
It’s best if she ran. If she was gone, he wouldn’t have to listen to her talk about repaying her debt, or that idiotic talk about becoming a brilliant emperor. They were complete jokes!
But even after waiting for a while, Xie Lin Lang did not run. Nor did she try using the words of justice to criticize him, or try to dissuade him. She only watched him through her overly clear and bright set of eyes.
Her eyes made him feel extremely uncomfortable as if she could see through his eyes and into his heart.
Suddenly, snow began falling from the sky. At the same time, Xie Lin Lang also started to move.
When she lifted her hand and loosened her five fingers, a piece of jade pendant fell from her hand.
Qin Jue didn’t pay attention until he saw the pattern on the pendant hanging in front of him. His expression suddenly became extremely cold.
He grabbed the pendant from her hand and asked coldly, “Where did you get this?”
Xie Lin Lang answered, “It was personally given to me by the Empress.”
“That’s impossible!”
“Why is it impossible?”
She raised her eyebrow, and with a solemn and truthful tone, “Before I went to the North to relieve disasters half a year ago, Her Majesty secretly summoned me and gave me the pendant. She then asked me for a favor.”
In fact, this was indeed given to her by the Empress. However, it wasn’t for the purpose of a favor, but rather the Empress saw that Xie Lin Lang was almost at the age of fourteen, the age of marriage, so she gave her this jade pendant.
The Empress told her that if one day she no longer wanted to live as a man, she could use this pendant to find her or anyone in the Xia family. As long as they saw this jade pendant, anyone in her family would be willing to take her in and secretly help restore her female identity.
That’s why this pendant actually acts as a trade fulfillment item.
But Qin Jue didn’t know that.
However, what he did know was how much this pendant meant to his mother because he had an exact copy of the same pendant. The two pendants originated from the same ore that was carved into two. Because every part of each ore had its own unique patterns, it was impossible to produce a third pendant of the same kind.
Back when he first noticed that the pendant his mother always carried around was gone, he asked her about it. She told him that the pendant was given to a destined person. So when she said ‘destined person’, she actually meant Xie Lin Lang?!
The sounds of killing in the distance completely disappeared. Qin Jue squeezed the pendant in his hand, not being able to escape from his thoughts. After a long time, he finally asked with a quiet and hoarse voice, “…What did she ask of you? My mother, what was it she wanted you to do?”
Xie Lin Lang folded her hands behind her back, “She told me that…she felt unease.”
Qin Jue flinched, staring unmovingly at her.
Xie Lin Lang returned his stare openly, “But she couldn’t clearly say where this unease was coming from. So she asked me that if one day she’s suddenly no longer in this world, she hoped that based on the kindness she had shown me, I could watch over you, teach you, and guide you. Because she was afraid that you wouldn’t believe me, she gave me this pendant as a token of proof.”
Listening to her story, the corners of Qin Jue’s eyes grew red!
“You mean, she already felt something was off half a year ago?!” Then why didn’t she tell him, and instead, told Xie Lin Lang?!
Xie Lin Lang saw that even at a time like this, his body was still covered in thorns and unwilling to trust her at all. After a moment of thought, she suddenly took a step forward and gently embraced him.
“I don’t know why she decided to entrust this to me either. But Qin Jue, do you believe that sometimes when someone is uneasy, it’s because they are afraid they cannot protect the person they want to protect?
So the reason the Empress came to me instead, is because she cares too much about you. She’s afraid that she’ll have to leave you one day so she’s preparing a path of light in front of you. That way, even if you walk alone from now on, you will not lose your way.”
Hearing her words, Qin Jue’s body began to tremble uncontrollably. So Xie Lin Lang held onto him even tighter, her voice growing more serious as she tightened her embrace.
“Qin Jue, in fact, you haven’t lost everything. You still have the Empress’ feelings towards you, and from now on, you will have me.”
“Hell is a dark place and life is cruel, but as long as you’re willing to open up to me, from now on, I will never let you be alone!”
She spoke this statement incredibly earnestly.
Qin Jue has changed, yet he hasn’t changed. Indeed, he no longer needed her help and repayment of favors, yet he’s afraid of the dark; he will need someone to stand by him in the darkness.
Qin Jue’s body grew stiff in the embrace, going from intense resistance to silence. After a long while, with a low and hoarse voice, he finally asked, “…How are you so sure, that you won’t leave me alone in the future?”
His question surprised Xie Lin Lang; it was as if a strong force suddenly struck the iceberg and left a dent. And under those cold hard layers of ice, she finally touched his softest and most vulnerable spot.
“Because I will become stronger,” Xie Lin Lang released him, telling him word by word, “I will become stronger than the Imperial Preceptor. So strong that unless you no longer need me, no one else will be able to tear us apart!”
Her words shook his heart to the core. His clear pair of eyes stared directly at her as if he wanted to look through her, and directly into her heart.
Xie Lin Lang didn’t avoid his gaze either. She openly let him stare at her for as long as he wanted. As she met his gaze, she extended her hand and patted him on his shoulder.
“From now on, just be assured and follow me. Stop thinking about random things all day long. Since I have been sent by the Empress, I will definitely teach you well. And don’t be embarrassed. Although I’m the same age as you, I’m the Number One Scholar! Being able to learn from me will only be beneficial for you!”
Qin Jue lowered his eyes when he heard her words. And only after a while, his pale white face finally formed a soft smile.
He held up Xie Lin Lang’s hand, and placed the pendant back into her palm, and squeezed it. Then squinting his eyes, he fleered, “You want me to BaiShi*? You’re a hundred years too early.”
*拜师 [bài shī]–to formally acknowledge someone as one’s master/teacher.
Finished, he re-entered the carriage without turning back, leaving Xie Lin Lang staring at his backside, a little stunned.
“Wait, are you serious? Aren’t you going to listen to what the Empress says?”
Xiao Xi who had been watching from the side finally came up and weakly comforted Xie Lin Lang, “GongZi, don’t be sad. His Highness will come to know your sensible intentions.”
Xie Lin Lang shook her fan, unbothered, “Of course, he must be shy! Just you wait, one day, I will make him wholeheartedly ask me to be his teacher on his own will!”
