Valérez’s brown cheeks were flushed, as if he had too much to drink. The redness was noticeable still, despite the darkness of his skin.

‘How much did he drink to be like this?’

I glanced at the glass of champagne in his hand and smiled.

“Then can I sit on the sofa with you? My legs hurt.”

“You don’t like you are tired, but fine.”

Valérez had a sour attitude today, contrary to his reputation of being ‘friendly to any woman’, but he didn’t refuse me. As soon as I took the seat next to him, I began to speak, glancing at him pressing his temples with his long fingers as if he was tired.

“Did something bad happen?”

“Why?”

“You look like you’re in a bad mood.”

“Hmm… Well, I was a little chilly.”

Rubbing his soft-looking curls, he gave me a refreshing smile and looked at my complexion.

“It’s because today is a bit sad for me,” he explained, “Pardon me if I offended you in any way.”

“No, don’t worry about me. I was just worried.”

“You’re a sweet girl. What’s your name?”

“I’m Edith.”

The moment I said Edith’s name, his green eyes, which reminded me of southern spring, instantly froze. I silently swallowed a gulp at his glare.

“Edith…” he said as if astounded, “Edith Abina?”
