The Whole World Thinks I’m a Woman Disguised as a Man [E-Sports] - Chapter 58.1
Wen Yan’s words brought a sudden pause to both Duan Wenzheng and Xue Lan’s movements. At the next moment, Xue Lan promptly seized Duan Wenzheng and guided him into the room. He moved with a vigilant gaze, scanning the surroundings for potential hiding spots.
His eyes fixed on the vacant space beneath the bed, and an immediate notion struck him to conceal Duan Wenzheng there.
“???”
Duan Wenzheng observed Xue Lan’s agitated and hurried actions until the little devil coaxed him beneath the bed with practiced ease. Only then did Duan Wenzheng snap back to awareness, gripping Xue Lan’s hand.
“Why am I hiding?” Duan Wenzheng wanted to stand. “What did he come for?”
Xue Lan observed Duan Wenzheng, appearing somewhat oblivious to the situation. His eyes conveyed a message of “persist with your stubbornness” incredulity as he pressed down on Duan Wenzheng’s shoulders, preventing his attempt to rise.
If Duan Wenzheng truly harbored no fear, why then had he been so clandestine earlier, refraining from even daring to knock on the door with any force?
As Xue Lan gazed at Duan Wenzheng in disbelief, another set of knocks resounded on the door.
“Exist?”
Changing his mind, frantically, Xue Lan swung open the wardrobe door and swiftly stowed the person inside, allowing no space for objections.
“Wait there for a second!” Xue Lan looked at Duan Wenzheng with wide eyes. “Don’t make a sound! You mustn’t come out!”
“…”
When he recollected his apprehension about Wen Yan potentially discovering them earlier, Duan Wenzheng still felt a bit unnerved by Xue Lan’s “super aggressive” demeanor. If caught by Wen Yan now, he was certain that he wouldn’t allow him and Xue Lan to remain alone.
With that thought in mind, Duan Wenzheng hushed his movements and remained covertly concealed within the confines of the wardrobe.
Xue Lan let out a sigh of relief. Bearing in mind that Wen Yan was still outside, he hurried to open the door.
After a considerable delay, the door creaked open. Wen Yan’s focus shifted past Xue Lan into the room beyond.
“What is it, Captain?”
Wen Yan remained silent, a faint crease forming between his eyebrows. His gaze continued to scrutinize the room, yet he refrained from taking a single step into Xue Lan’s room.
On one hand, Xue Lan feared Wen Yan might uncover Duan Wenzheng, who had sought refuge there. On the other hand, regret gnawed at him endlessly as he questioned why he’d chosen to hide him in the wardrobe. Wouldn’t it have been wiser to hand him over directly to Wen Yan?
Wen Yan’s typically reserved demeanor had genuinely left a profound impression on Xue Lan and the earlier situation…
Observing Wen Yan’s continued focus on the wardrobe behind him, Xue Lan’s heart raced in his chest, though he feigned composure as he spoke once more. “Captain?”
Only then did Wen Yan return his attention to Xue Lan. “Do you still have a headache?”
Xue Lan responded, “It’s a lot better now.”
Wen Yan could discern a faint blush on Xue Lan’s cheeks as if the fever hadn’t wholly subsided yet. Unconsciously, he raised his hand to touch Xue Lan’s forehead.
Having just committed a discreet act, Xue Lan took a slight step back from Wen Yan’s actions.
Xue Lan’s response prompted Wen Yan to halt his hand in the air.
“Sorry.” A second later, Wen Yan withdrew his hand, stiff. “I just wanted to see if you still have a fever.”
Xue Lan’s subconscious movements stemmed from his guilty conscience. He hadn’t anticipated Wen Yan to provide an explanation. After all, Wen Yan wasn’t known for frequently justifying his actions.
The subtle, not easily discernible concern in Wen Yan’s tense expression brought a warmth to Xue Lan’s heart. Wen Yan was indeed a commendable captain. Despite the numerous troubles Xue Lan had caused him in the past, Wen Yan never complained. Instead, he showed concern as if Xue Lan was one of his own.
Xue Lan felt touched. “It’s okay. I didn’t mean to.”
Wen Yan’s expression gradually relaxed. His gaze settled on Xue Lan’s face before stretching out his hand once more.
Amidst the silence, he heard his heartbeat gradually racing.
Just as Wen Yan’s hand neared Xue Lan’s forehead, a soft “bang” abruptly echoed inside the room.
Xue Lan swiftly turned his head to look and spotted a solitary coat hanger on the floor. In the slightly spacious wardrobe in the corner, Duan Wenzheng’s unimpressed eyes were locked on him without a single blink.
“…”
“What happened?” Wen Yan jolted back to reality in alarm, his attention following Xue Lan’s gaze. However, due to his position in front of the door, he couldn’t see the area around the wardrobe and the fallen coat hanger.
“It’s nothing.” Xue Lan awkwardly blocked him. “I didn’t place something carefully, and it fell.”
Wen Yan paused. Uncertain whether he believed him, he still asked, “Do you need help?”
His words reignited the calmness in Xue Lan’s heart, causing it to race once more.
Helping him —
Would lead him to come into his room.
Could it be that Wen Yan… had discovered something?!
“No — it’s nothing. I can do it myself!” Xue Lan said, expression grim. “Captain, it’s late. You should rest up!!”
Having spoken, he shut the room’s door. After a prolonged silence outside, Xue Lan cautiously cracked open the door, only to find an empty corridor devoid of any presence.
