You’re Here Now? (5)
“I want it…”
Merson whispered to me, attempting to look as pitiful as possible. Oh… my heart is wavering. But, no!
“Still, no…”
“What’s going on here?!”
“No…?”
I turned my head at the screams from above. It seemed like the second time I’d heard it today.
“After ruining everyone’s privacy, what is going on here…?”
“Shh! Shh! Keep quiet!”
Chenin scolded me, while Evan, who had been watching, seemed shocked. His eyes about to pop out, before quickly grabbing Chenin’s hand and pulling it down. He then fervently explained to Chenin with just his mouth, looking quite pitiful. He seemed to be saying, ‘Demon King! Demon King!!!’
Thanks to that, I regained my composure and was able to push Merson away. I adjusted my disheveled clothes with embarrassment and roughly brushed my hair back behind my ears. Khhm, how embarrassing.
As I stood up with Merson, Chenin and Evan knelt down in the opposite direction, bowing their heads. Oh, I can’t get used to this.
Now that Merson’s identity has been fully revealed, it was only natural for these two to act this way, but given the life I’ve lived up till now, it was incredibly awkward and unfamiliar.
In my heart, I wanted to stop them from doing that, but seeing that Merson, the one being greeted, didn’t seem to care, I didn’t bother trying to fix the situation. Besides, if I had told them to just use casual language with the Demon King, they would have likely never spoken to me again, like the mermaid princess who lost her voice forever.
After the unintentional little hiccup(?), the four of us sat facing each other for the first time in a while.
There was a slightly awkward atmosphere, but it wasn’t entirely unpleasant. Surprisingly, Chenin was the first to break the silence.
“How are you feeling?”
It was a casually thrown remark, but I felt that she genuinely cared about me. For a moment, I felt goosebumps on my arms, but I forced a big, carefree laugh.
“I’m fine, really!”
“You just thought it didn’t suit me right?”
What. Did it show that much?
“….yes.”
I thought Chenin would burst into anger after my honest answer, but unexpectedly, she remained silent. Her strangely contorted expression wasn’t directed at me. Due to Chenin not responding while staring into space, our small talk ended very abruptly.
“I never expected to meet like this all of a sudden! I don’t know…”
While Evan was talking with a grin, he suddenly noticed Merson and his voice quickly lowered. He seemed reluctant to turn his head toward Merson, completely turning his body in my direction. Merson, do you know that you’re being ostracized?
It was funny to see, but I didn’t show any signs of amusement and casually spoke.
“I was originally planning to rest a bit more, but I couldn’t.”
“Is there a problem that you couldn’t rest?”
“Serdebella Renee.”
Just mentioning the name caused both of their expressions to darken as if by some magical enchantment.
“….You may have heard, but that woman hasn’t faced any punishment.”
“Even if Trentus has strong authority, they cannot go against God’s will. After all, we are human.”
Seemingly frustrated by the helpless reality, Chenin clenched her lower lip hard.
“So, no one can oust Serdebella Rene from her position as saint?”
“Why ask when you know it’ll tire your mouth.”
If Merson hadn’t been next to me, Chenin would have probably muttered curses out loud. I could understand her frustration as she suppressed her anger.
However, I didn’t express my anger like Chenin. I simply placed both of my hands on the table.
“If no one can oust her.”
When I briefly turned my head toward Merson, our eyes met. It seemed like he was curious about what I was going to say. I gave him a small smile before looking back at Chenin and Evan.
“We have to make her go on her own.”
“…..”
Despite my optimistic words, the surroundings fell into a momentary silence. Evan, who had been sitting blankly, vigorously shook his head as if to shake off the thoughts.
“Do you plan to scare her?”
“If necessary.”
“How will you do it, even when the imperial family has let go?”
“Since the imperial family had no choice but to let go, so I’ll take action myself.”
“So, Erina what can you do …..?”
Merson was hanging at the end of Evan’s gaze. His pupils, who had been going straight with doubts, trembled vigorously, turned around for a while, and settled toward me as if they were looking for their place.
“…Yes, I’ll trust you.”
Um, how could you answer the question before you finish asking it?
“I want to go too! Take me with you!”
Chenin intervened, slapping her chest with her palm, making a loud smacking sound.
“I want to see that bitch begging for mercy! With my own two eyes!”
The determination in her voice was reflected in the redness that colored her neckline as much as her hair.
“You can’t do that.”
At my words, Chenin’s face contorted with despair. However, it didn’t seem like she was giving up. Her tone rose in a different manner from her earlier passionate outburst.
“Why? Why! I’ve imagined killing her several times a day. If that damned pig is the one who trapped me in the abyss, then Serdebella is the one who grabbed me by the hair and threw me into despair!”
Merson flinched at Chenin’s sudden outburst of emotions, but I reached under the table to stop him.
