Two-Faced Princess - Chapter 290
“A powerful and significant force. Thankfully, unlike his ancestors, he’s been a step back in politics, merely observing.”
Apollonia recalled the face of Gabriel Fortrus she had seen in her childhood. He had enviable territories, soldiers, and the long-standing, solid power that only a confident and prideful person could have.”
Although he had little experience in being dispatched to war, his family lineage had excelled in military tactics and martial arts for generations. He might have seemed to lead a carefree life, but his soldiers were as sharp as finely honed knives. If they sided with Emperor Gaius, many would inevitably shed blood. Apollonia hoped this would not come to pass.
“Amoreta shouldn’t approach him, and Duke Fortrus shouldn’t engage in combat on Paris’s side. In fact, it would be best if he didn’t attend the coronation at all,” Apollonia said, seemingly having made a decision. Sensing the shift in mood, the previously distracted Evangeline paused to look at her.
With less than three months left, there was only one solution: to immediately sever the relationships among the three, regardless of the potential shock to Amoreta. Apollonia remembered the last time she saw Amoreta — her face reddening at just the mention of Paris and her voice filled with blissful contentment. She was unmistakably in love.
“She must be devastated,” Apollonia whispered to herself.
“Are you speaking of Amoreta?” Evangeline inquired, shrugging.
“Yes. It’s not only about the letters. As you’ve previously mentioned, she’s gradually realizing the true nature of the crown prince.” After a brief pause, Apollonia continued, “I’ve passed on messages through you, Evangeline, but Amoreta hasn’t reached out to me yet. It’s evident she hasn’t entirely given up on Paris.”
How would she react upon learning about Paris’s intention to hand her over to Duke Fortrus? She might not believe it since it would mean renouncing the only love she’s ever known. But what if there came a moment when she had to face the truth herself? By now, Apollonia knew what she must do.
“I had hoped to give her more time to find her way out, but now it seems impossible,” Apollonia remarked, picturing the delicate figure of Amoreta, who looked as if a mere touch could break her. “Whether she breaks down or endures, it’s her destiny.”
She quickly pushed that thought aside. Evangeline, in lieu of replying, perked up her ears, making her appear even more feline.
“Evangeline, I have a challenging task for you,” Apollonia began.
“To inform Amoreta about Paris’s true intentions?” As Apollonia nodded in agreement, Evangeline blinked in confusion. “Why is that so challenging?” she innocently inquired. Apollonia chuckled softly in response. Despite Evangeline’s exceptional observational and memory skills, she was naive when it came to intricate emotional intricacies, especially matters of the heart.
“You’ll see when you try. Tell h,r about Paris’s agreement with the Duke. If she remains skeptical, offer her guidance. She’ll listen if you mention the message comes from me.”
Evangeline, tilting her head in puzzlement, listened to Apollonia. Beside her, Ruben also paid close attention. Although one was a human and the other a creature, their curious expressions were strikingly similar.
Apollonia beckoned Evangeline closer with her forefinger. As Evangeline leaned in, Apollonia whispered instructions to her.
“Is it sufficient to say just that?”
“That’s enough,” replied Apollonia, her expression tinged with bitterness.
Paris was insatiable in his desires. He frequently forgot the value of what he possessed and coveted what others had. For any shiny new trinket, he would readily relinquish a treasure he held.
In the dimming evening, Amoreta searched for someone in the garden. Her gaze finally settled on a shadow at the garden’s opposite end.
“It’s you, after all.”
“Of late, I haven’t taken many walks, so I felt compelled to summon you,” Evangeline remarked, crossing the garden.
“I don’t know how you managed to place that letter by my bedside, but the crown prince might have discovered it.”
Amoreta said, her tone somewhat reproachful. It was clear that she was more worried about the person communicating through Evangeline than about Evangeline herself.
“Thank you for the concern, but that won’t happen. If it ever seems too risky, I can simply eat the letter on the spot,” Evangeline replied, shaking her lush chocolate-colored hair and murmuring something Amoreta couldn’t quite catch.
“Is he doing well?” Amoreta inquired.
“If you’re so curious, why not leave Paris and find out yourself? To still be indecisive, it must be such a profound love… Oh, I shouldn’t have said that.”
Evangeline caught herself and stopped abruptly.
The anguish on Amoreta’s face made it difficult for Evangeline to continue.
Evangeline sighed inwardly. Though she harbored resentment towards Paris and was indifferent to Amoreta, seeing those large, pure eyes glistening like dew-filled crystals was heartbreaking. If Amoreta was this sensitive, how deeply wounded would she be upon hearing Evangeline’s story?
