My Rental Boyfriend Is My Boss?! - Chapter 41
Chapter 41. I Wonder Why
“She’s with me. Can you please take your hands off her?”
“What?”
At first, Mukai looked back at him bravely, but when he recognized the tall and strong Kamijemori, he stiffened and let go of her hand.
“Oh, Mukai! I was looking for you.”
Kato came running up from the back. He was not surprised by Kamijemori, but gave her a wink and took Mukai, who looked confused. It’s the same with Michiru, who didn’t understand the situation.
‘Did you… care?’
With that in mind, the biggest question was right in front of her.
Before Michiru could even open her mouth, Kamijemori bowed her head and held out his right hand.
“Will you dance to a song for me?”
He smiled softly and with a gentle tone of voice, invited Michiru to join him.
Michiru put her hand on his hand without hesitation.
“Yes.”
She was breathing hard, but Michiru wondered why. He looked much better than the person she had imagined in her dreams.
His body was well proportioned with good posture, and his height helped her to look good just standing there. A large hand beckoned Michiru, and he gently wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her closer. When his long, clear eyes recognized Michiru, he smiled sweetly at her and she couldn’t help but fall in love with him.
But it was only until Michiru pulled herself closer that she was able to gaze at him with fascination.
“Oh, but I can’t dance…”
“It’s okay.”
Michiru was confused, but Kamijemori whispered quietly, their cheeks almost touching.
One step. Then two steps.
‘… Huh?’
With Kamijemori’s body in close contact with Michiru, he was able to tell her what to do next. If she was in doubt, his arms would support her.
It’s not smooth, but somehow, Michiru knew this movement. It’s a basic, monotonous movement. Even so, she could say that she was dancing to the music.
Michiru looked at Kamijemori in a sudden.
“You must have practiced this when you were a child.”
“Minoru, you can dance, can’t you? But why? Why are you here?”
As soon as Michiru asked, her words trailed off.
Kamijemori raised one corner of his mouth in a wry smile.
“I can’t dance, I’m too twitchy… I wonder why.”
That answer wasn’t good enough for Michiru. He tilted his head slightly and narrowed his eyes in annoyance as he put his face next to Michiru’s ear.
“I didn’t want to leave you alone today.”
Immediately, Michiru’s breathing became so loud that it almost stopped.
But then her calm self whispered, “Don’t get your hopes up.” With such self-awareness, Michiru carefully opened her mouth.
“Is it as a… boss? As a… rental boyfriend?”
The arm around Michiru’s waist was full of strength.
“I’m just a guy.”
Michiru stopped dead in her tracks. When she looked up, Kamijemori just smiled and let his gaze drift, and finally turned to Michiru with a troubled look.
“… Is that not good enough for you?”
“No, no, no.”
Shaking his head, Kamijemori chuckled and ran his fingers through Michiru’s messy hair, tidying it up. Then he held out his hand again.
“Well, would you like to keep dancing? I know you’ve always wanted to dance with someone.”
Michiru put her own hand in the big one, and he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her closer to him.
Michiru felt nervous, fidgety, and her heart was palpitating.
Only her heart stayed busy all the time, and gradually, Michiru realized it.
‘… I’m dancing with Minoru…’
Not alone, not in practice, but together, the two of them tapping out the faltering three tempos.
One, two, three.
One, two, three.
The girl who had been leaning against the wall and watching by herself, pulled by the large hand of Kamijemori, was finally able to dance in the circle.
“I’m glad I exchanged numbers with your friend before. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to ask where it was.”
After one song, they walked out of the hall to catch our breath in the evening breeze, and Kamijemori told her how it had all happened.
Kato had received a call from Kamijemori just before the party started, asking where the venue was. So he couldn’t believe what Michiru had said. Later, when Michiru was being taken by Nakamura, Kato headed out of the venue without helping Michiru because he had gone out to pick up Kamijemori nearby.
“When did you get it? Was it at… the izakaya?”
“It was when you got drunk at the after-party.”
That was a first.
Apparently, there had been an exchange at the wedding after-party that Michiru was unaware of.
Even Michiru still only knew Kamijemori’s work number, and a bit of frustration showed on her face when she thought about it. Kamijemori laughed.
“Don’t make that face. I’ll tell you anything you want to know.”
“No, I don’t. Please tell me…”
“Yes.
“So that’s why you’re here…?”
“Yes. That… wasn’t really supposed to happen. When you cancelled your plans to rent a boyfriend, I thought… you’d found another guy.”
“What? No way!”
Michiru was shocked to find out that she had been misunderstood, even though she had done it to keep her distance from Kamijemori.
“What? I can’t find someone… that quickly.”
“That’s not true. It’s possible. But when I heard what you said on the fire escape the other day… I couldn’t help but think if you had gone alone today, so I called… and asked for the location of the venue.”
Michiru let out a sigh at Kamijemori’s unexpected words.
