Nights under the half moon – 1

It was a cool and breezy evening.

When Chizuru woke up, she quietly slipped out of her bunk and went over to the open window. It was quite warm before she had fallen asleep, so she had left the window open to allow the breeze to flow through. But it now felt cold.

Standing by the window, she gently looked back over her shoulder.

‘Lukrov is sleeping unusually well tonight.’

On the bed, Lukrov was sleeping, and his arm, which had held Chizuru from behind earlier, was still stretched out on the sheets in the same position.

Perhaps it was a warrior’s instinct, but Lukrov usually woke up at the slightest sign of change.

It was unusual for him to remain asleep when she woke up in this manner. She had an idea as to the cause. 

“Phew……”

She let out a short sigh, but there was no sign that her husband was going to wake up.

Of course, she did not want to wake him up; she wanted him to rest as much as possible, as he was very busy and slept very little.

So, after confirming that Lukrov was sound asleep, Chizuru turned her gaze out the window.

The moon was pale against the night sky.

The moon was in its half-moon phase, and its light was faintly illuminating the garden below. A graveled and leveled pathway led up to the castle gate, where two guards stood beside a fire, securing the left and right sides of the gate.

Perhaps it was because she was no longer looking at screens such as cell phones and televisions, but Chizuru’s eyesight seemed to have improved considerably since her return to Lukrov’s world. Right then, she couldsee one of the guards yawning and covering his mouth with his hand from a window on the second floor of the castle.

It has been almost a year since she returned to this world.

It has been about six months since they got married.

Many things have happened ever since.

She had a crush on Lukrov, who was stubborn, and just when she knew that their feelings were mutual, she was kidnapped and injured …… And finally, everything is finally starting to turn out peacefully and smoothly. 

She has a gold wedding ring on the ring finger of her left hand, symbolizing their vows and eternal love. Of course, on Lukrov’s ring finger there is a matching ring as well.

They are now a husband and wife.

‘Somehow …… It still gives me a tingling sensation even now ……. I wonder if I’ll get used to it someday.’

She held her left hand out the window and caught the moonlight reflecting off the ring.

The candlestick on the mantelpiece, which was still lit before she went to bed, had already gone out, so the only source of light was coming from the moon.

The moon at its waning stage.

A moon that is only half full.

It does not have the presence of a full moon, nor is it portrayed in pictures in a familiar way like a crescent moon. But for some reason, Chizuru gazed at that half-circle of light.

She thought she had heard that the circular shape of a wedding ring represents eternal love.

Certainly, the two of them are now as content as a full moon.

‘But there was a time when we were like a half-moon too. I miss those days..’

Back then, she never thought it would come to this. She began to recall when they first met, Lukrov was always unfriendly and stern. There were even times when Chizuru was aware of her feelings for Lukrov and started to casually approach him, but he seemed to be detached and unapproachable.

‘One way road… Only a half.. That is exactly what it is, a half moon.’

‘It would be interesting if I could tell Lukrov from that time that you and I are going to be husband and wife someday.  Fufufu’

As she smiled quietly, somehow fantasizing about such a thing, a night breeze blew through the window. Although it was still the beginning of fall, the nights were getting colder, the same thing  was true for summer. The climate in this world was much drier than that of Japan.

Chizuru closed the window with a shudder in her shoulders – or rather, tried to close it.

Outside the window, the moon in the eastern sky seemed to gleam mysteriously. Chizuru suddenly felt a jolt as if her head had been struck against something …… And she lost consciousness.
