Could you please be careful? (5)
It was a book that Erina hadn’t taken with her, one that Kayle hadn’t managed to burn.
“These are novels I wrote in Erina Holden’s world. Erina Holden read this book and knew everything about you. She even said to take good care of you when she returns to her original world.”
Even Kayle, who was fluent in all languages of the continent, had never seen this script before.
Without hesitation, Kayle grabbed Bella’s head with one hand. As he infused magic into her, her body shook violently, and all the knowledge she possessed flowed into him.
This high-level mental magic, which was considered the pinnacle among high magics, required a significant amount of magic from the caster and posed a fatal risk to the target.
It could result in memory loss, decrease in intelligence, loss of hearing and sight, and in some cases, death.
Bella lost consciousness because she was attacked without a chance to resist. As her body went limp, the embedded glass began to tear through her flesh. Eventually, Bella’s body collapsed to the floor.
Having quickly mastered the Korean language, Kayle swiftly read through the books Bella had handed to him. From the Bennon Massacre to the Emperor and the celestial being, and a disgusting romance that elaborately narrated events that hadn’t occurred, Kayle tossed the books to the floor in disgust.
“That woman, the saintess. Do you remember….? What was it like, here?”
The image of Erina asking while pointing to her heart as if trying to gauge a reaction from him came to mind. It was a gesture that couldn’t possibly come from someone unaware of Bella’s existence.
His blood that had been boiling within him turned ice cold, followed by a despair that felt like being sliced apart.
As Kayle punched his fist down, the entire temple shook. Debris began to fall as if it were about to collapse.
‘It’s a lie, a lie.’
His confused and wavering eyes soon retreated into their lids. With a flash of blue light, Kayle left the temple and transported to the Demon King’s castle.
“De, Demon King?!”
His sudden appearance caused a stir within the castle. However, even the usually jovial Raynon didn’t dare speak to him. The murderous aura emanating from him felt dangerously sharp enough to slice through souls.
His long legs strode without hesitation towards a specific location.
The black door, wrapped tightly in chains to prevent anyone from getting out, towered with an indiscernible height. The giant skeletal doorkeepers, proportional to the door’s size, moved aside their spears that were blocking the door and bowed as Kayle revealed himself.
As Kayle reached out his hand, the seemingly unopenable door swung open with a gust of wind and ushered him inside.
What greeted him upon entry were the screams of countless souls. In the hellfire, bones melted and reformed, only to melt again in a continuous cycle.
Kayle, who had never spared these tormented souls a glance, suddenly stopped. Although it was a scene no different from any other, something caught his eye.
Snip.
With a flick of his finger, a soul emerged from among the flames, its body half-melted beyond recognition.
Another flick, and the soul, now recognizing its own face, fell at Kayle’s feet.
The naked woman rubbed her head on the ground and begged for salvation.
“I won’t be greedy for anything anymore. I, I won’t consume anything like the bodies of the demonkind. Please, just, take me out of this dreadful hell. Please.”
Kayle lifted her chin.
“…What’s your name?”
“Please, just get me out of here…”
“I asked what is your name!”
“…I am Erina Holden.”
Her usual bright aura and charming smile were nowhere to be found, but her face was unmistakably Erina’s.
He wanted to scream. Why do you bear that face? Why are you begging for salvation with that voice?
The woman who was trembling before him bore no resemblance to Erina, yet was hauntingly familiar. With closed eyes, he could envision her, the very face he had secretly watched sleeping countless nights.
His grip on her chin tightened.
“Ahk.”
“Then who the hell are you?”
Saliva leaked through the gaps of her forcefully clenched teeth.
“I… I am Erina Holden.”
“Who are you, really!”
“Huhk!”
Kayle’s shout echoed like the cries of souls writhing in hellfire.
He wasn’t truly asking the woman before him. The question was directed at his one and only beloved companion, Erina.
A sense of futility struck him. It felt as if a vital part of his body had been severed, rendering his very purpose for living meaningless.
A deepening despair. The betrayal felt as profound as the love he had once held. An emotion so intense that it dragged him to the depths of despair for the first time in over a thousand years.
But what tormented him the most was…
“…I can’t live without you.”
Regardless of the deception, Kayle knew he couldn’t live or perish without Erina. He was doomed to wait endlessly and search for her as an empty shell.
“How could you do this to me, Erina?”
The words weren’t meant for the woman before him. His voice, ragged with wounds, carried his desperate emotions, enough to bring tears to anyone listening. Yet his actions were cruel, almost unrecognizable as belonging to the voice’s owner.
Crunch―
The soul bearing Erina’s face ultimately had its jaw crushed in Kayle’s grip. Then flailed ceaselessly like a fish thrown onto dry earth.
With sad eyes, Kayle looked down at her and, without hesitation, snapped his finger. The woman’s body tumbled into the inferno of hellfire without restraint.
“Erina.”
Even if she had departed to a world unknown to him, Kayle couldn’t stop. A fierce fire blazed in his heart, and the word ‘betrayal’ that had surfaced was now firmly lodged in a corner of Kayle’s chest.
Moreover, the relentless love he couldn’t erase began to lead Kayle astray.
“…You need to stay by my side.”
He resolved that if she fought and wouldn’t return, he would bind her limbs and drag her back. It didn’t matter if every ‘I love you’ was a lie.
It would pain him if Erina cried and screamed in refusal. He would have to gently lick the tears from her cheeks and coax her with sweet words to stay with him as before.
Determined, Kayle came out from hell and instantly cast a teleportation spell. The area around the hellgate, shrouded in dark clouds, brightened as if it were broad daylight, encircled by a blue light.
For him, wielding magic came without any difficulty or strain.
The ground shook explosively, and the mana that had condensed around Kayle dispersed in an instant, flashing a bright blue. Even the skeletal gatekeepers shielded their eyes with their elbows from the intensity of the light.
As the light vanished and tranquil darkness came back to its place beneath the clouded sky, Kayle was nowhere to be found.
