Could you please be careful? (12)
We also stopped by a bakery to buy some bread and selected a few fruits at the market. By the time the sun started to set, Doyun’s hands were full of bags.
“Let’s really head back now.”
“Yes, it’s later than I thought.”
Contrary to our words, we took a few steps and then had to stop again.
“Hey, Kang Doyun! Is that you?”
“Choi Hee-chan?”
“It’s been a while, you rascal!”
We should have gone home right away. We should have just skipped the punching machine, the bread, and the fruit, and gone straight home.
Doyun’s sudden acquaintance introduced himself as a schoolmate from elementary school. He mentioned that his friends were all gathered at a nearby pub and suggested that we just say hello and go.
Doyun asked for my permission, and I couldn’t really say no, so I nodded.
But to my surprise, it wasn’t just friends who were there. All of Doyun’s close seniors were gathered around.
I was forcibly pulled into a seat, and when we were seen walking together, we were suddenly considered a couple. Despite Doyun insisting otherwise, they paid no heed and just decided on their own what our relationship was.
Aside from the misunderstanding of being seen as a couple, the biggest problem was the ‘drinking pressure’. Even though I said I wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t drink, I had to endure a litany of unwanted diagnoses.
“I had my wisdom teeth removed a few days ago too!”
“That one had a fistula surgery.”
I was bombarded with various medical terms I didn’t want to hear.
In frustration, Doyun shouted, “Actually, she’s pregnant!” but it didn’t make a difference.
Instead, he just got berated for supposedly covering for his girlfriend. Ultimately, all the alcohol that came my way was hastily dealt with by Doyun.
Doyun, who had already drunk what seemed like two bottles, was on the verge of exploding. If I handed him any more of my drinks, it seemed like he’d be the first to collapse.
When the glass was handed to me again, I took a sip. Doyun, surprised, tried to take the glass away, but I raised my hand to stop him.
“Oh, you’ve got some drive!”
Drive, your head.
I covered the glass, hiding the contents, and subtly teleported the soju into the empty bottle.
I should’ve done this earlier.
Doyun, mistakenly thinking I had drunk the soju, banged his head on the table.
“It’s my fault, my fault. My nephew… ugh.”
He’s really drunk.
I accepted every glass that was handed to me, though I didn’t drink a single drop.
After some time, I looked around to assess the situation. By now, pretending to be drunk should work, right?
I pretended to lose strength in my hand and let the glass drop.
Clang!
The sound of breaking glass was perfect for drawing attention. The spilled alcohol on the table was also ideal. My clothes were a bit wet and smelled, but it was better than being stuck there. And now, what remains is…
Come on, Method Acting!
“Mimi, dunk too. My head…feels like it’s on a roller, coaster. We need to go, home now.”
“……”
“……”
The once noisy surroundings suddenly became eerily quiet. I was mortified and wanted to disappear, but since I’d come this far, I decided to keep pushing my luck!
“Doyun’s drunk too, hehe. We need to go, home and use the bath. My stomach’s growling. Let’s go home, Doyun!”
I opened my eyes drowsily and made a slurred, half-baked sound. The nasal tone was essential.
“That man over there, he’s ugly. You know? Get your nose hair sorted out. Otherwise, a nose hair monster might come for you! The man next to him is a little better, but his breath is so bad I can’t even understand what he’s saying.”
Giving a cute insult.
The expressions of those who pressured me to drink were now stiffening. The effect was as expected.
“Mimi, you seem really drunk… Should we call it a night?”
“Yes, yes! Doyun’s out of it too. Can we go now?”
“Yeah, of course.”
I wobbled precariously, almost falling, but made sure to drape the bags and Doyun’s arm over my shoulder for support.
I lightly supported him and led him outside. The fresh air, even a bit cold, hit my cheeks. Maybe that helped, as Doyun seemed to start regaining his senses and began to steady himself.
“Sister, are you…okay?”
That’s not really something you should be saying.
“Yeah.”
Whoosh—
The wind picked up a bit. As I hugged myself to keep warm, Doyun took off his jacket and draped it over me.
“Cover yourself up. A pregnant woman mustn’t catch a cold.”
“Thanks……”
“Uweecckk.”
Doyun started heaving, gripping the utility pole in front of the store. Passersby glanced over and whispered among themselves. I held onto his jacket to keep it from falling off and patted his back with my free hand.
“Ugh, I’m fine, ugh, weecckk—!”
I wondered if we could make it home before sunrise.
“Hey, Kang Doyun. You’re really something!”
People from the pub started to come out, seeing Doyun’s condition. Eventually, with the support of his friends, Doyun headed for the restroom, and I had to wait outside in the cold until he returned.
“Aren’t you cold? Come inside.”
It was the guy who had insisted on making me drink so much alcohol. Oh right, I need to keep up the act. Pretend to be drunk, pretend to be drunk.
“Hmm, Mimi prefers it out here.”
“Haha! I was surprised at first, but you’re cute the more I look.”
What is this crazy guy saying?
