Could you please be careful? (11)
…The situation became a bit awkward.
“Have a drink too, Mimi. Come on.”
“No, absolutely not!”
“Why the fuss? It’s not like you’re the one drinking.”
Before I could protest further, Doyun snatched the glass from in front of me and downed it in one gulp.
Unfortunately, the attempts to get me to drink didn’t stop there, and poor Doyun was suffering the most.
“Mimi, you haven’t been in Korea long, right? Let’s have some fun like Koreans do tonight!”
Like Koreans do? I’m Korean, you know!
“Refill the glass! Refill it!”
We were at a bustling pub in the city center. The loud music and chatter were adding to the heat of the evening. However, I had no intention of enjoying myself (I actually wanted to go home) and felt out of place. It was torturous.
“…I’m sorry.”
Doyun, whose face was flushed from the alcohol, bowed his head apologetically.
“…When can we leave?”
“Leave? We’re drinking until sunrise tomorrow morning! Cheers!”
The man who seemed to have heard my plea stood up with his glass and shouted with an overly enthusiastic voice.
Everyone clinked their glasses on the table. The atmosphere was so intense that I could barely escape, so I weakly raised my water cup and tapped it against Doyun’s glass.
“…Cheers.”
If you’re wondering how I ended up in this situation, I’d take you back to the moment I opened my eyes this morning and explain.
It was, as usual, an ordinary day. I was hoping for something a bit more special to happen.
After Aunt went to work, Doyun and I had a late lunch and went outside. I didn’t have anything particular to do, but I joined Doyun because I was bored just staying home.
Last night, he couldn’t put his smartphone down, and with a triumphant shout of “I did it!” he bounced on the sofa like a child. Even though he got scolded by Aunt, he still looked thrilled.
“Finally, someone’s going to sell the album!”
The reason we went outside was to complete a transaction. Doyun was thrilled to finally get his hands on a discontinued album by his favorite foreign pop artist.
When it was time for the appointment, the seller arrived, and after a brief exchange of greetings, the transaction was completed. In less than a minute, the deal was done, like a secret exchange between two people.
It was both amusing and endearing to see Doyun carefully holding the shopping bag containing the album. It made me wonder if this is what it would feel like to have a younger brother like that.
Just as I thought we would head straight home, Doyun suddenly stopped in his tracks. I had walked a few steps ahead without realizing he wasn’t following and then turned around when I called him.
“Let’s stop by here.”
“Eh?”
Doyun was pointing at a store selling baby clothes.
I hesitated. It was my first time stepping into a baby clothes store. I had only admired the cute clothes displayed outside, never expecting I’d actually walk in myself….
The white, pink, yellow, and sky-blue clothes looked like fairy wings. Seeing the tiny shoes made me smile. Is this really for feet? I poked at one of the little shoes. It looked like a cherry blossom petal fallen on the shoe on a spring day.
“Do you like that?”
“Oh, no. It’s just too tiny.”
Before I knew it, Doyun was standing next to me, picking up the same pair of shoes.
“Please wrap these up.”
Just like with the album transaction, Doyun quickly completed the purchase and handed me the well-wrapped shoes.
“It’s a gift for the baby. I know it’s still a long way off before the baby is born, but I wanted to give it to my niece or nephew first.”
Niece or nephew? The idea had never crossed my mind, and I ended up laughing out loud.
“I didn’t expect to have such a handsome younger brother.”
“Eh? How old are you…? Oh, I didn’t even ask.”
“I’m twenty-six.”
Doyun looked quite shocked, probably assuming I was younger. I patted him on the back a few times.
“Thank you, little brother.”
I needed to make sure he knew that.
The awkwardness I felt on the first day gradually eased with our ongoing conversations. Doyun’s straightforward personality helped us become close more quickly. Despite his fiery demeanor, there was a gentleness and kindness in his soft heart.
Our plan to head straight home was slowly changing. After seeing the punching machine outside the arcade, Doyun’s competitive spirit kicked in.
Wham!
With a powerful punch, his score shot up to the highest level instantly.
“Whoa.”
I remembered a few times I had tried the punching machine for fun during college. Every time, I’d gotten scores so dismal it was hard to keep my eyes open… Seeing it again after so long, even though I knew I wouldn’t be good, I felt like giving it a shot.
“I’ll try it too.”
“Eh? Your body might…”
“It’s okay, I won’t hit too hard.”
I tapped the punching machine lightly with a smile as the cushion rose up.
Wham!!
“……”
“Huh?”
A deafening noise erupted, and the score skyrocketed as if it were going to pierce the sky. I pushed Doyun out of the top spot and claimed the highest position.
“…I’m honored, Sister.”
My physical abilities had clearly improved. Being the Demon King’s companion is something extraordinary in many ways.
“Is this the kind of thing you say? I’m scared of myself.”
It sounded cheesy, but it was sincere. However, Doyun, who heard this right next to me, looked horrified.
