After I Married the Disabled War God As My Concubine - Chapter 223
Huo Wujiu stepped forward anxiously. Just as he stopped by the imperial bed, he heard the man on the bed cough hoarsely and ask, “Is Wujiu here?”
Huo Wujiu froze for a moment, and only after a blink did he answer in a deep voice.
“Uncle,” he called in a whisper.
Then he heard a rustle on the bed.
Huo Wujiu rushed forward, and saw the thin and bony Emperor Zhao Yuan, struggling to sit up on the bed. He was almost out of shape. The eunuchs on either side of him moved forward to help him, and it took a while for them to finally help him sit firmly on the bed.
“Wujiu.” Emperor Zhao Yuan shook his head and looked at Huo Wujiu.
Huo Wujiu made no reply.
Seeing this, Emperor Zhao Yuan raised his hand and waved away all the eunuchs and palace maids in the bedchamber.
A few moments later, the door fell shut and only Huo Wujiu and him were left in the room.
“That child, Yuyan… It’s because I did not teach him well.” As soon as Emperor Zhao Yuan’s words fell, he was already a little breathless.
Huo Wujiu knelt down in front of his bed quietly.
“It’s this nephew who is unfilial.” Huo Wujiu uttered deeply. “I’ve made such a mess and caused Uncle to worry.”
Emperor Zhaoyuan waved his hand.
“How could it be your fault?” he countered hurriedly.
Huo Wujiu made no reply.
After a moment of silence, Emperor Zhao Yuan asked again, “Then when you were trapped in Southern Jing, was it also because of Yuyan?”
Huo Wujiu raised his head and looked at him. He stopped for a second and still did not make a sound.
Emperor Zhao Yuan sighed.
“You neither have to feel guilty, nor be afraid of angering me,” he said. “I know my own spawn very well. Even if these things didn’t happen, he won’t last long. ”
Huo Wujiu pursed his lips.
Emperor Zhao Yuan looked at him.
“I just want to find out why,” he said.
Huo Wujiu was silent for a moment, then took out a few bloody letters from his sleeves and put them on Emperor Zhao Yuan’s bedside.
Emperor Zhao Yuan stretched out his ragged hand and picked up the letters tremblingly.
For a spell, only the rustling sound of letters being flipped page by page was left inside the bedchamber.
After a long time, a drip rang.
Huo Wujiu raised his eyes and saw that Emperor Zhao Yuan, who was holding a letter, was already in tears.
“Uncle.” Huo Wujiu frowned and stood up. He moved closer and drew the letters away.
“This is a matter between me and Elder Brother.” Huo Wujiu frowned. “Uncle, you just need to get well.”
Emperor Zhao Yuan lifted his head at his words.
“It’s my fault for not teaching Yuyan well.” He trembled and choked. He tripped over his tongue as he spoke, even forgetting the Emperor’s self-proclaimed title. “I only thought he was quiet and a deep-thinker, but I didn’t expect him to worm his way to the tip of a horn. I also know that he is filial. Since he was seriously injured, he has been overwrought. However, I never thought he’d shift the blame on Elder Brother and you. He…How am I supposed to face Elder Brother after I die?”
After speaking, Emperor Zhao Yuan choked up and could no longer say anything.
Huo Wujiu stood there, holding the letters in one hand. He silently regarded him for a long time from above with the letters in his hand gradually getting wrinkled.
Then, he squatted down in silence, raised his hand clumsily to wipe the tears from Emperor Zhao Yuan’s face.
“I don’t blame you,” Huo Wujiu said slowly.
Just as he was about to withdraw his hand, Emperor Zhao Yuan suddenly extended his hand and grasped Huo Wujiu’s hand in his.
That hand, jagged and withered, had little strength left. But Huo Wujiu couldn’t move. After a moment of stalemate, he still let Emperor Zhao Yuan hold his hand.
“I know I shouldn’t be saying this now.” Emperor Zhao Yuan let out a sigh of relief and spoke with a trace of pleading in his tone. “Wujiu, I won’t let Yuyan inherit the throne anymore. He is not in good health, and his mind is dark. If he sits on the throne, I won’t be at ease for you or for him.”
After speaking, he shook Huo Wujiu’s hand.
“I know that you do not care about this throne, but I have to give it to you. I am at ease with you and want to make amends for you. My days are numbered, so after my death, the world will all be yours. ”
Huo Wujiu stayed silent without speaking.
“These were originally yours,” Emperor Zhao Yuan added.
But Huo Wujiu suddenly said, “They shouldn’t have been.”
Emperor Zhao Yuan stared at him. His eyes were already cloudy from his illness, so now that they were covered with a layer of moisture, he looked a bit pitiful.
“The war was not for the throne, nor was it for fame and fortune. It was only for my Huo family military comrades, for a place they could be, and for them to enjoy peace and tranquility,” Huo Wujiu recalled slowly. “This is what my father said back then, when he staged the uprising.”
Emperor Zhao Yuan’s tears fell down again.
“Elder Brother…”
“Father’s wish has now come true.” Huo Wujiu said, “Uncle, I understand what you mean. Whatever you are not at ease with, I will do it for you, but these things, originally, were not what I wanted to take either.”
Emperor Zhao Yuan nodded with tears in his eyes.
“Then, just think of it as accepting your uncle’s compensation, okay?” Emperor Zhaoyuan said. “All right… I have another presumptuous request.”
Huo Wujiu knew exactly what he wanted to ask.
Sure enough, Emperor Zhao Yuan continued.
“I only wish you could keep Yuyan alive after my death. Even if he is deposed, reduced to being a commoner, and placed under house arrest in the palace for the rest of his life, it is fine,” Emperor Zhao Yuan said. “Just think of it as giving him a chance as well as a punishment, so he can reflect well on the things he did, okay?”
Huo Wujiu shut his mouth, and after a moment, he slowly replied.
“Then, in exchange, I would also like to make a request to you, Uncle,” he said.
“Go ahead,” Emperor Zhao Yuan said.
“Since this throne is a gift that Uncle gave me as a compensation, I would like to pass it on to another person as a gift, too. Is that okay?”
