Fostering the Male Lead - Chapter 139
I liked the heavy feel in my palm. I smiled benevolently at the other men, who watched me with a lot of vigilance.
“Shall I make a suggestion?”
“…”
“If you tell me who sent you, I’ll spare you all. I can even protect you if you want.”
“…”
I suggested a peaceful way, but the answer I got was silence.
In fact, I knew it wouldn’t work.
I could tell just by looking at their stance and gaze. They were the types who would never open their mouths even if they were tortured.
“… Sorry, but I can’t help it.”
I had no choice but to kill them all. I kicked off the ground and dashed towards them.
*
“Who sent you?”
“…Cough.”
“Is it the Empress?”
“Urgh.”
The man’s unfocused eyes closed slowly. I grabbed the chin of the man who was breathing heavily and asked clearly.
“Or is it someone else?”
“Urgh, ugh.”
After babbling a few times, he soon became limp. I bit my lip at the last assassin who had stopped breathing. In the end, nothing was gained. I couldn’t figure out who the hell had attacked me and for what purpose.
“So frustrating.”
I straightened my bent knees with a sigh.
“My Lady! Look behind you!”
Startled by the baron’s screaming voice, I twisted my body. Right in front of my face, a sharp sword was swung at me.
“Aagh! Die!”
I was careless. I thought I had killed them all, but I didn’t know there was one still alive.
‘I can’t avoid this.’
I had to choose.
My arm or my neck, which one to keep and which one to throw away.
‘Then of course I’ll go with an arm!’
I quickly raised my right arm to cover my face and hold the sword with my left hand.
‘Shit, too late.’
The enemy was faster than me. Right before the man’s sword could touch my arm, a red light surrounded me. I reflexively closed my eyes at the blindingly intense light.
There was a distant thud, the sound of something crashing into a tree.
“Huh…?”
I was speechless at the sight unfolding before my eyes. For some reason, the man who was going to attack me, was stuck in a tree and couldn’t move.
I lowered my gaze following the slowly flickering light in the darkness.
“No way!”
The source of the light was my tattooed right wrist. Pulling down my gloves, I opened my eyes wide.
One of the five petals had fallen off.
“Is it gone?”
I sighed when I saw the petal completely disappear. The tattoo, that I could not get off no matter how much I rubbed and washed off, disappeared without a trace.
“My lady!”
The baron, who came running hurriedly, looked at me covered in blood and didn’t know what to do. The pupils looking at me quivered like an earthquake.
“Are you okay?”
“As you can see, I’m fine.”
It might have been different if he had jumped in with the determination to kill me from the start, or if he had decided to cut off my limbs.
‘I’m sure I would have still won though.’
As I rubbed my cheek dazedly, the baron held out a handkerchief. I asked, wiping away the blood with his navy blue handkerchief.
“Did you see that Baron? That light from before.”
“Yes, I did.”
“Did you see what happened?”
Pointing at the fallen man, the Baron nodded. Unlike me, who closed my eyes to the blinding light, the baron said he saw it clearly.
Right before the guy’s sword touched my arm, a red light flashed and the he suddenly bounced back.
“It looked as if he had been pushed out by a transparent shield.”
Both of us looked at the man. As I approached him, I grabbed his neck gently. There was no plus. A moment ago, it appeared that he had stopped breathing because of the collision. I looked down at the corpse and moved my gaze to my wrist.
There were now four petals left.
If it weren’t for this, I’d have lost an arm.
‘Is it a defensive magic spell?’
What kind of great luck is this? Never would have I thought that a tattoo which I was indifferent to would save my life. It was an unexpectedly great gift.
‘I’ll have to find Lia no matter what happens.’
Having received such a great gift, even if Lia was dying, she had to be saved.
“First, let’s search the corpse for anything that can be used to identify the person behind this.”
“You’d touch the body, Baron?”
When asked carefully, the baron’s perfectly shaped eyebrows twitched.
“…Young lady, even though I’m Katzel myself, I can still do this much.”
I thought he couldn’t do it because he was sweating so much. I was glad he could. I held out the dagger I had picked out to the baron.
“Keep it with you, just in case.”
“No way. Could there be more?”
“Maybe. These guys aren’t just assassins, they’re well-trained knights.”
Then the baron’s face darkened again. I looked down at the corpse in front of me with emotionless eyes. From their bold movements and familiar fighting style, I could deduce that these guys were knights, not people who specialized in assassination.
The Baron and I rummaged through piles of corpses to gather information. But, covered in black darkness from head to toe, they left no trace.
‘Well, since they attacked me using the offset magic, they probably didn’t do anything stupid to leave a trace.’
I know only one person who would target me this thoroughly.
The empress.
But strangely, I shook my head muttering to myself that it was not her style.
‘I don’t think it’s the empress.’
If the Empress was behind it, she would have sent a monster, not a well-trained knight.
Or maybe she would have sent a Chimera.
