Counting the Night of the Blazing Flame (1)
‘Knight of the Blazing Flame.’
Lukrov could no longer remember who had first started to call him that. It felt like it was a long, long time ago.
Dragging his long, blood-soaked sword, Lukrov began to wander in the darkness of the night.
A dry breeze blew through the dark abandoned forest located behind an old castle, causing the leaves and branches to dance and make a rustling sound.
Tonight, Lukrov had once again blended into the darkness to assassinate a political rival of the king. A man whom he didn’t know and a family he held no grudge against. Lukrov had once again killed another man.
Seeing the blood on his chest, Lukrov rubbed it with his hand in an attempt to remove the red stain, all the while knowing that it was useless. As expected, not only did it not come off, it spread even more. It was as if it had become a symbol of his current situation.
He approached the black horse which he had hidden deep within the woods and touched the saddle with a blank look in his eyes. He could feel the coldness of the saddle with his fingers.
There was a time where the saddle would be warm from his lover who had ridden on it with him.
She was a lovely maiden with dark hair – a priestess sent from another world to help in the extermination of the evil dragon. She was also not good with horses and would get dizzy very quickly. She was weak to alcohol as well and would often give Lukrov a hard time.
That person was Lukrov’s lover.
His horse snorted and tried to rub against him, twisting his neck as if he could sense the emptiness of Lukrov’s heart. But such a gesture from his beloved horse brought no comfort to Lukrov in his current state.
Even if his heart were to be ripped out of his chest while he was alive, it wouldn’t hurt as much as the pain he was feeling.
“…Chizuru.” He called out her name.
If he called out to her, his voice might reach her. Then she might appear before him again, just like in the past when they first met. Maybe even the gods would feel sympathy for this poor man and would show him a shred of mercy.
Even if he couldn’t see her, he at least wanted to know where she was.
Even if she had forgotten the promise they made to be together and returned to the other world, he still wanted to know if she was safe.
Even…… if the worst had happened – as many of his friends feared – and she had been attacked by a beast in the night and perished without a bone remaining……. He wanted to build a grave for her, even if it’s just an empty one. He would end his own life next to it.
But Lukrov didn’t know anything yet.
The only hope he had was the unreliable promise made by the king.
The king had a ‘Fortune Teller’ in the castle who claimed that he knew when and where Chizuru would be summoned again and that he could possibly track her down…
Clinging to the vain promise and desperately grabbing on to the glimmer of hope fading from him, he lived like a living corpse.
“Chizuru…”
For three years, he kept calling her name. But no matter how much he called, there was no answer. Lukrov’s heart was reaching its limit, and he couldn’t take it anymore.
But he still didn’t know anything…
He didn’t know that this hell would continue for a long time, for what appeared to be an eternity…
For fourteen years, Lukrov had to survive this hell of solitude.
