Transmigrated into the Cannon Fodder's Daughter - Chapter 67.2
By the time Li Qianfei had reapplied her makeup, a half-hour had already passed.
Li Xiao’s eyes met Lin Zhaoxi’s. There was a playful smile tugging on the corner of her lips. So Lin Zhaoxi had really come, huh?
Li Xiao scanned Zhaoxi’s slender figure. Since Zhaoxi was early into her pregnancy, Li Xiao could hardly tell that she had been pregnant for more than two months. Her face was beautiful and pure, and she held a similar temperament to that of Zhan Jiayin’s when she was younger.
It was a pity that Zhan Jiayin wasn’t present. Her presence would’ve elicited great drama.
“This is Lin Zhaoxi, my good friend,” Li Qianfei introduced her.
As Lin Zhaoxi smiled, she scanned her eyes over the six unfamiliar women. Just which one of them was the woman Li Nanjue had cheated with?
When Li Nanjue saw Lin Zhaoxi, her good looks stunned him and her name felt eerily familiar. So many things had happened in the past two months that he had forgotten about the young female student that he had a fling with. Because of this inexplicable sense of familiarity, Li Nanjue smiled. “Qianfei’s a little temperamental. Thank you for taking care of her.”
Lin Zhaoxi hung her head in an attempt to avoid his gaze. With her cheeks flushed, she forced out the words “Oh, it’s nothing. Qianfei is quite nice. If she hadn’t been taking care of me all this time, I wouldn’t have known what to do with myself.”
Li Qianfei grinned from ear-to-ear, satisfied with the flattery.
The deja vu that Li Nanjue burned strong, but even as he rummaged through his memories, he couldn’t remember who she was. All he could do was suppress these emotions.
Because none of the guests that had been invited were willing to come, Li Nanjue simply considered this a family banquet. When everyone arrived, he nodded and brought out the dishes.
Li Xiao struggled to resist the urge to laugh out loud. This coming-of-age was rather miserable. It was as if she had merely come over for a casual meal. Was her dad deliberately trying to undermine Li Qianfei?
Li Xiao looked down and took a bite of her food. The Li family chef was still a good cook. When the Li family goes bankrupt, she should look for the chef and ask them to cook for her and her mom.
Lin Zhaoxi was stunned by the food. She’d never eaten anything as delectable before, and the presentation was incredibly artistic.
Her portion size was rather small, but Lin Zhaoxi still ate more than usual. The mushroom soup, as mundane as it sounded, was 100 times better than anything she’d ever eaten before.
Lin Zhaoxi was unable to resist the urge to refill her plate.
Subconsciously, Li Nanjue found his eyes drawn to Lin Zhaoxi. Obviously, she was his daughter’s best friend and he couldn’t have any relationship with her. But when he saw Zhaoxi blush in embarrassment as she tried to get more soup, he couldn’t help but chuckle. She was different, whereas most people would typically restrain themselves on such an occasion.
Simultaneously, Lin Zhaoxi happened to look up at him. Their eyes met. Lin Zhaoxi turned away and pursed her lips, looking slightly stubborn.
The tug in Li Nanjue’s heart became even stronger.
Soon, a fish topped with lemon was served.
Everyone was served a plate, and as soon as they finished eating, someone would come to remove the plate,
The light citrus smell penetrated everyone’s nose, arousing their appetite.
Lin Zhaoxi hesitated before tasting the fish. It was a mix of sweet and sour. If she hadn’t been pregnant, she would’ve devoured the whole thing immediately. But after a few bites, she felt nausea rise up. Lin Zhaoxi rushed to the side to dry heave.
Li Qianfei hurried after her and patted her shoulder. “Is everything okay? I would’ve told them to not serve that dish if you didn’t like it.”
Li Xiao was genuinely surprised that Li Qianfei seemed to care for Lin Zhaoxi.
When the truth of Zhaoxi’s pregnancy was revealed, Li Qianfei would only be hurt more. Li Xiao unsympathetically looked forward to witnessing such a scene.
Lin Zhaoxi vomited and rinsed her mouth before returning to her seat. Her face was visibly paler, and she looked much more charming and pitiful.
Qu Lian’s face sank. Zhaoxi had suddenly arrived and vomited. How was everyone supposed to continue eating?
Where on earth had Qianfei found such a rude friend? Qu Lian’s appetite soured.
Yang Mei looked at Lin Zhaoxi suspiciously. Was it really a bad stomach? Or was Zhaoxi pregnant?
Yang Mei held no affection for Li Qianfei. She still hadn’t forgotten the dirty gaze Li Qianfei had cast aside at her. Yang Mei covered her mouth and said with a gentle smile, “Is Qianfei’s friend pregnant? She has similar symptoms as the rest of us.”
Yang Mei faked a gasp. “Sorry, you’re only a freshman in college, right? I must’ve been mistaken. There’s no way such a young girl of your age would be pregnant, right? A girl from such a prestigious school wouldn’t degrade herself in that way.”
Anger flashed across Li Qianfei’s face. “What’s wrong with you? Zhaoxi is nothing like you.”
Lin Zhaoxi paled. She glanced at Li Nanjue with watering eyes. Her expression was stubborn and sad.
A realization flashed across Li Nanjue’s mind, and an image resurfaced.
In the hotel, he had handed his business card to a girl, telling her to call him in case she needed anything.
He’d run background checks on her and knew that she was a good girl who was working hard to make a living.
“It’s you!” Li Nanjue blurted.
He had finally remembered. His gaze landed on Lin Zhaoxi’s stomach. “You’re pregnant?” he asked almost hesitantly as if he were restraining some kind of tumultuous emotions.
Lin Zhaoxi seemed shocked. Through gritted teeth, she said, “Don’t worry, I’ll raise the child myself. I won’t rely on you.”
Everyone was stunned, with the exception of Li Xiao who had already known. It was as if thunder had struck the ground.
Lin Zhaoxi was pregnant? Furthermore, the father was Li Nanjue? When had this happened? Wasn’t Lin Zhaoxi a good friend of Li Qianfei?
Even Yang Mei, who was looking for a fight at the beginning, opened her mouth wide in disbelief.
Silence permeated throughout the room.
Li Xiao tapped the table and broke the stagnant atmosphere. “I told you. My readings are never wrong. Father will have seven more children. It seems the mother of the seventh child has appeared.”
